Hard Drive Security Screw for T43

#1 Post by jbthomson2 » Tue Apr 22, 2008 11:24 am

Does anyone know the specs for the Security Screw that holds the cover on the HD caddy for a ThinkPad T43 ? I think they are brass (gold) colored, perhaps 2.5 mm or 3 mm and quite short. I don't care about the color, I just need to pick up a suitable substitute somewhere.

I have seen several. (they are all 3mm X 3mm) The security screws that IBM gives out are Allen head (6 sided hex) that don't give much security. I have seen Torx and security torx (a pin sticking up in the middle and some sort of 5-point security torx (5 points with a pin in the middle). I use the plain slotted screws myself. If someone wants to steal your drive, it is easy to break the cover off with a flat screwdriver. I would rather have my drive stolen than have my drive stolen AND the case broken

Indeed, mines look like standard Allen screws too. I think these screws are used to secure the optical drive bay too.

Thank you, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I'll see about picking up a 3mm x 3mm whatever-head-style screw-they-happen-to-have at my local hardware store tomorrow.
