2GB+2GB vs 2GB+1GB RAM under Windows XP 32
2GB+2GB vs 2GB+1GB RAM under Windows XP 32
I understand that xp 32bit only recognise 3GB of RAM. My X61 has 1 stick of RAM (2GB) at this moment and I am thinking about adding more RAM. Should I get 1GB stick or 2GB stick. Since the price of both are not much different, should I add 2GB stick instead of 1GB? Are there any downside of having 4GB of RAM under XP 32bit? Are there any benefit of dual channel if I add 2GB RAM to my present 2GB of RAM?
Thank you
Thank you

the system will run it in dual-channel mode no matter what so just get another 2GB chip. Since you have a X61 and not a X60 you can eventually use the full 4GB of RAM if you decide to use XP 64bit or Vista 64bit or Windows 7 64bit when it comes out.
Since you said the price difference isn't much different ($10 i'm guessing) then just get that.

that talks about the T60/61 but same applies for the X60/61

I think you mean 32-bit OS, as an 64-bit OS has a MUCH bigger limit on memory. A 32-bit system has a 4GB theoretical limit in memory, but I believe Windows reserves the last Gig for devices like graphics cards, hence leaving you with 3 'usable' GBm509272 wrote:Curious.

Incase you were wondering, 64bit maxes out at 16TB
A 16TB laptop, now that i can't imagine what we'd need that for! I know i know, people always say that but can you imagine the whinners complaining about Windows using up 90GB of RAM then? LOL.... that'll be the funniest day ever! We never thought we'd live to see a system needing 4GB of RAM but here we are... i guess who knows, 16TB could come about in 10yrs or so then we start going to Petabytes? 1,000,000GBs anyone?Windows XP Professional x64 Edition supports 128 GB of RAM and 16 terabytes of virtual memory address space, as compared to 4 GB of both physical RAM and virtual memory address space for 32-bit Windows XP Professional
