T42 an other charging problem

#1 Post by lemmerdeur » Wed Apr 23, 2008 11:28 pm

I have a charging problem with a T42p. It is running fine on charger (IBM 4.5A) only but it is not charging the battery From the back or the docking station. When I look at the battery information, I see Battery1 charging, current 0.03A, voltage 12.30V and wattage 0.24W It is not he yellow socket and all three fuses are OK. I got a new battery but same problem. What could be the problem or what should I look for?
I did a search but couldn't find an answer to my situation.

If you remove the a/c adapter will your T42p run on battery?

Yes, it runs fine on battery too. When the battery is charged and the AC adapter plug, the light is green than goes to orange when supposedly charging but doing nothing.

Is there any IBM tool to test the thinkpad and find out where is the problem and if it is the mother board?

When you say the fuses are fine, what did you check? There is a little fuse on the bottom near the battery connector right next to the docking port. It is under some black plastic. It is not the big white fuse. It is about 1/4" away. It is black and has "F" printed on it. That is the one that I'm betting on.

Can I access it by just removing the keyboard?

No. The board has to come all the way out and I think the back frame needs to come off also.

OK, I will take it all apart. While all apart is there any other component I should check if that fuse is good?

I have the exact samt problem with my T41. I tested it with 2 batteries and the problem is the same. I also tried the batteries in a T40 and here they charges fine - so it must be some problem somewhere on the motherboard. I have a few defect motherboards for T4X so if anybody knows what component that is failing it will be great.

Read my post above. It is probably the fuse I described.

I already tested the 2 fuses located in this area and a lot other fuses but I found none of the broken.

Yesterday evening I decided to take a chance. I had noticed that the battery led on the lcd always was green. I tried to replace the semiconductor located just next to the lille fuse that you mentioned. After that the led os now orange as it should be but still the battery do not charge. I checked the amps, Volt and Watt ini IBM battery maximiser. Amos and Watt are both 0 and Volt is 12,5. tonight I will try replacing more of the semiconductors in the "battery plug area".
