FS: R50p in Australia

#1 Post by malcolm99 » Thu Apr 24, 2008 7:35 pm

Hi All,

I have an R50p for sale, now that I've replaced it with a new R61 (T9300)

Original Specs: 1832-22M P M 1.7GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HDD, 15 UXGA(1600x1200) TFT LCD, 128MB ATI FireGL T2, CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-burner, Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), IBM 802.11a/b/g wireless, Secure Chip (TCPA), 9 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro.

I've upped the RAM to 1GB, and will supply the unit with the original 60GB 7200 RPM HDD - which still has the recovery partition, as well as a 160GB 5400RPM HDD which has a clean install of XP.

This is in pretty good condition, and still highly usable. There are a couple of minior problems:-

1. The 2x USB ports don't appear to work - they supply power, appear in the Device Mgr, but XP cannot recognise anything plugged-into them. I'm not sure if this is an XP or a functional issue. PC-Doctor doesn't flag them as problematic, but I suspect they're fried.

2. There is a slight separation of two parts of the screen bezel on the top-right-hand side, on the outer-edge. This is purely cosmetic, and I'm sure someone with steadier hands and better eyesight than me could probably super-glue them back together - the separation is only a millimeter or so wide, and perhaps 3cm long.

The screen is perfect, and the bezel issue stated above notwithstanding, cosmetically the case and keyboard are excellent - no scratches or other marks. Apart from the USB issue, the PC functions perfectly.

I'm fairly fussy about my PC's, look after them as well as I can, and would give this a 7/10.

I'm looking for AUD450 for this, or approximately USD425, but will accept reasonable offers. I will ship it anywhere providing the buyer pays the cost. Payment by Paypal or direct bank-acct deposit.

Please PM me or email to mclouston1 at mac.com

FWIW - I also have a 2yr-old 17" MacBookPro (2.16ghz, 2GB RAM, 200GB HDD) for sale at a reasonable price. This would be a 9/10 - I'm going through a major computer rationalisation at present...

Thanks....

Darn it...had I not spent the same amount on a Dell Inspiron 700m, you'd be getting an email. Good luck with the sale - seems like a competitive price even with the issues described.

Just to make things more annoying for you, had I not bought Kristian's Z60m last month, I'd have been emailing you as well :P

It's a shame the USB ports aren't working... but even still it's kind of tempting on a parts basis (especially that Flexview screen!)

Malcolm, can you hold out a week? I may have a contact who's interested if you're able to give him that long to get the funds necessary to buy this laptop. He has a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that would be ideal for this. If not, then no worries.

Hi Kristian,

No problem - I can wait another week. I'd rather sell it here thsn hassle with ebay. I also used a pcmcia card for mousing, but actually preferred the trackpoint. Once mastered, using a laptop without one is a real pita.

Hey Blue Thunder, yes I guess there's not too many Aussies on this forum, must be a well-kept secret.

Malcolm, I haven't heard anything as yet from my contact. If you get any other offers, feel free to carry on with the sale.

No devices in XP sounds like an XP problem to me. I've had that on multiple thinkpads. Do you have the recovery disks still? Perhaps a reload of the original image can confirm if the USB ports are fried or not, that'll help you move it I reckon. I'm after a new Thinkpad for my Dad, so would be interested if a reimage resolves the USB problem.

Also, your MBP. Can you let me know what model it is? Main thing I'm wondering is if it can handle more memory? The early ones could only take 2GB...

After having little interest on here apart from various people wanting me to disassemble it and sell them "just"" this or "just" that bit, I ended up donating the R50p to the 12yo son of one of my wife's friends, thus earning a good deal of kudos and gratitude, if not cash.

Just hope I haven't let myself in for an ongoing support obligation.

I managed to get AUD1670 on eBay for the MBP - a pretty good result, although I really, really hate ebay/Paypal.

So, that's all for now folks.
