T41p Pricing Advice- Help me out

#1 Post by djpharoah » Thu Apr 24, 2008 11:08 pm

I have a dilema at hand - whether to upgrade my Thinkpad or get a newer cheaper laptop to deal with the work I do.

Here are the specs for my thinkpad

1.5GHz Pentium M
1GB (2x512MB DDR333)
60GB 7200rpm
128MB FireGL T2
SXGA+ LCD *
CD-RW/DVD
Atheros a/b/g
2 - 6 cell batteries **
2 - 2 optical batteries **
Power adapter.
IBM Restore CDs + Manual + Other stuff

* - The LCD has stuck pixels at the bottom. A lot actually like 1400x100 at the bottom. It makes working a bit of a pain as you have to resize everything but everything works fine otherwise. Also the previous owner buffed the LCD to get a few surface scratches out so the LCD is now glossy vs. matte on normal TPs.

**- Batteries have cycles on them. With a combination of the optical bay battery and a 6 cell I get 1.5-2.5hrs depending on what I am doing. I regularly swap these batteries so that I am not ragging on one.

So what would a price be for this if I keep the current LCD? How much more would I get if I bought a LCD from ebay/forum and put it in?

I really need to know as I might have to sell this off and get a new Dell (*eek) or something with a dual core proc + graphics.

I'm not sure it will be worth fixing the LCD (you probably won't get back the money you put into it). Some of the sellers on this forum might be able to answer your question.

If I might ask, what software are you using that it doesn't have the power to handle?

Well I just did a restore with my TP cds (gotta love them) and wow my laptop is fast again. I am a linux user so I keep forgetting XP gets bogged down after 6 months ;) Anyways I have decided to keep the T41p as its value of the video card + performance factor is pretyy good for its price even now. I just bought a 1.7GHz dothan (2mb cache yum) and a SXGA+ LCD off ebay.

As for the software I use - Solidworks 2007, Cosmos 2007, AutoCAD, and VM-Ware
