Z61t Momentus 7200.2 Upgrade

#1 Post by chelo » Fri Apr 25, 2008 1:45 pm

I have a problem with my Z61t 9440 machine and Seagate Momentus 7200.2 200 GB drive.

The problem is that Z61t does not recognize the drive (I have tried two different ones).

I have tried making images of my original drive using Ghost 14.0 and True Image. So I guess it is not a problem of the way I created the clones.

I have also tried installing XP from CD, but the installation tells me that there is no drive in the system (when one of the Seagates is in).

In BIOS I do not see any ! with the drive. I have also tried to change the SATA mode to compatible, but OS still doesn't recognize HD.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chelo

Do you have another computer to check if the drive is alive?

SATA drives have the same plugs for both notebook and desktop drives.

Odd that setting it to compatible mode didn't work. Did you try using nLite to slipstream the SATA divers in the XP CD? Service Pack 2 works too.

The drives are fine. I can see them on all other comps fine. I actually tried another drive yesterday. I pulled it out of WD Passport 320 Gb. Again, I made the clone of the original drive with True Image and then swapped the drives.

The BIOS sees the drive fine. However, it will not start the OS and XP install CD does not see it either.

I am really stumped. Lenovo support referred me to some paid service, they said they cannot help.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, I have not tried nLite. What would that accomplish? I have XP SP2 installed on the original drive.

A XP disc without Service Pack 2 on it lacks the SATA drivers needed to see the drive. Normally setting the drive to compatible fixes it. I don't know what's going on there. If you have a notebook with out that option, you can use nLite to slipstream in the SATA drivers into the install disc or Service Pack 2 which has them as well.

I didn't know that. Thanks, I'll try it and report back.
