Migrating hard drive contents (cloning) with R&R

#1 Post by bri » Sun Apr 27, 2008 12:23 am

didn't get any replies under the other section so i thought i'd post again here.

i want to move all my hard drive contents from a X61 to X61s with a bigger hard drive. is this possible with Rescue & Recovery? will one of these work:

plan A:
backup X61 to USB hard drive
connect USB hard drive to X61s
use R&R on X61s to restore contents

plan B:
backup X61 to USB hard drive
swap in X61s hard drive to X61
boot X61 to R&R desktop
restore contents to X61s hard drive
now: X61, T42p
before: 600E, T23, X20, T40, X40, X31, T60
FS: Travel Bezel, 100GB drive (OEM Lenovo)

I have not found R+R to be flexible in choosing the "source" of the backup. For me, R+R seems to only see and acknowledge backups that were created on that machine and not prior to any change in the backup destination preferences.

I created a backup to a USB drive, then I changed my preferences to use a network location, then when I went to use the USB backup, R+R no longer saw it as an available backup. (And I had to manually go delete it off the USB, too).

I'm sure there is a file somewhere that I could edit to spoof R+R into seeing the backups, but someone else will have to fill that in.

Bottom line- if I were you I would use Microsoft backup and restore (or similar) if you are only moving files.

If you want to move the whole image (system apps - everything) than either R+R or Microsoft should work fine.
