Memory from China?

#1 Post by thuur » Sun Apr 27, 2008 2:09 pm

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong board, move or delete it by all means :)

Does anyone have any experience with the memory modules that come from China?

Example:
http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0232808168
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0232808168 (US eBay)

I'm looking for a 256Mb upgrade for my 570's, and I know they are very picky about the type of memory. Or in other words: will this work?

Thanks in advance!

I wish there was a serious successor to the TP570..

Looking at the photo, if it is indeed the actual module, then the memory components were made by KTI, a company I believe was jointly owned by Texas Instruments and Kobe Steel (Japan). I have used several 256MB low density modules with those memories and did not have any problems. According to the label in the photo, the module was assembled in Taiwan (last line on label, "Origin TW"). The eBay seller is only based in China.

At $50 US (33 Euro) shipped, that's a little bit on the high side for low density PC100 256MB memory but if it's the only seller who ships to the Netherlands, then that is what you are stuck with.

The thing about RAM is, while there are tons of companies that sell sticks under their own name, there are only a handful of companies that actually make the chips. It's still good to check the reviews, but there isn't a lot to differentiate one brand of RAM from another.

Update: I did not notice this earlier, but this thread made me come back here and check:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=63463

The FRU on the label appears to say 10K0031, which is an FRU for a PC2100 DDR module, not a PC100 SDR. Even though the module components and the pinout appear correct, the label is very fishy.
