Is that a knife in your pocket, or are you just really, REALLY glad to see me?

Just 'cos it comes with a key ring isn't enough to persuade me to buy oneAndersonjoe711 wrote: Plus, it comes with a key ring!

Those things never stop growing. I have a Swiss Army knife that I purchased in Switzerland in 1998. It has a large blade, a small blade, a can-opener with a small flat blade (1/8"), a bottle-opener with a large flat blade (1/4"), a pick (Little used and I know not what for), a Number 2 philips (very, very useful), tweezers and the proverbial toothpick.
It is the smallest model I ever saw with all those features, and I carry it my pocket wherever I go. ... JDH

I had the misfortune of having the airport security folks at SFX confiscate my 4-5-6 mm. Allen "Y" wrench that I kept in my waistpack for bicycle adjustments.
In fairness, I certainly look like the type of untrustworthy scalawag who might well disassemble a 757 airliner with his Allen wrench in flight. I'm sure they hold the wings on with 6 mm. bolts.
My Swiss army knife (direct from Switzerland) has survived for 30 years or so, including a 7 mile trip on the 101 freeway atop my car where I'd accidentally left it. I think we are intended to be partners for life.

I like the one I bought in 2003. It is small but it has all the features I possibly wanted: a tiny scissors, flat-head driver with nail file, LED flash light, a ball pen, and a tiny knife.
I used to think about getting one with a built-in thumb drive. However I found that I don't really need it on my keyring several years later. I do have a thin, tiny 4gb usb drive in my wallet though.

I stuff my knife, keys, coins and such like in my leather bag along with my computer. There is a screwdriver in there (tiny, multiblade screwdriver just right for TP screws). Even an IBM digital lline detector in the back along with network cables. There is always a first time, but they X-ray it and I carry on. No problems yet.rkawakami wrote:Except perhaps, past the security gates at the airportjdhurst wrote:It is the smallest model I ever saw with all those features, and I carry it my pocket wherever I go. ... JDH. I had one of those giveaway Victorinox pocket knives that I forgot to leave in my car before attempting to enter a local amusement park (Paramount's Great America). With the zero-tolerance policy for any sharp objects, I was told that it had to stay behind. This was even before Sept. 11th.
If flying overseas (not very often), I put the stuff above in a pouch in my checked luggage to prevent obvious problems.
By the way, the large blade is nearly 3" long, so it is not one of those tiny knives. And although I said I got it in 2005, I was wrong. It was in 1998 when on that particular vacation, so I have been carrying it around for a decade.

It's a "trophy" product, intended primarily for promotional display purposes, but there are those who will buy it on a retail basis for it's collectability value.

I got a SIGG waterbottle from Switzerland (the BPA plastics, Nalgenes, are no longer safe), at Christmas, and have been toting it around in my worldly travels since. Its gotten beat up, dropped, etc. but still here....its even made it on countless flights (they let you take waterbottles as long as there empty!

gotta love those "zero tolerance policies." so what happens if you show them extra sharp number 2 pencil? is the guy at the security check going to be like "sir, unfortunetly your pencil is sharpened too sharp, gotta give it up or stay behind!"rkawakami wrote:With the zero-tolerance policy for any sharp objects, I was told that it had to stay behind. I have a 40 year old Victorinox that I've had since I was a kid. It's still in excellent shape. Talk about an amazing warranty...last year the spring broke on the scissors, and I called Victorinox repair and they sent me an assortment of springs for free. Of course there's a lifetime warranty, but these folks went out of there way to get me these parts. They didn't even have a record of the model it is so old/rare, but I talked directly to an old timer in the repair shop and she knew exactly which model I had. Class operation.

Wha.....? Well then.. Lucky. I can't remember how many times they've taken my little swiss knives in airport security. What am I gonna do with a .5 in knife?
"Come here...I'll scratch you!"
Edit: Just thought of something. How different is airport security in Canada, than here in the US?

I don't know (my flights don't take me to the US). I find if I empty my pockets so that the person alarm doesn't go off, I usually don't have any difficulty with the bag. Once or twice, they make me take out my laptop, turn it on to the point of the password prompt and let me through. ... JDHAndersonjoe711 wrote:<snip>
