Is it possible to merge this and the thread (Final SP3 ~ Direct Link...) started by Dimitri_P??

this only affects businesses running microsoft RMS, not the average user.
microsoft spokesperson wrote:“I wanted to update you on today’s planned release to web (RTW) (of XP SP3). In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
i fail to see how this would affect the general populous here on forum.thinkpads.com. :??:

we can't merge threads, only split them.   it's frustrating sometimes. :?

I read the news that Eric posted, but I also understand SP3 may install non-tested drivers that break Access Connections. I am going to wait for an all clear, then try it on my Desktop (where I do not have Access Connections), wait, see if the sky falls, and then try it on my T41. ... JDH

I've had SP3 (albeit in RC form) for several weeks now and not experienced any discernable issues. Not to say it'll be a universal experience for everyone, but incompatibilities such as this shouldn't prevent the average user from installing it, IMHO.

No problems at all for me using SP3 RC and SP3 RTM with Access Connections on ThinkPads using Intel and Broadcom wired NICs and Intel Wifi NICs!

Meltdown trying to install Win XP SP3

#7 Post by SteveDC » Tue May 13, 2008 8:40 pm

I am glad most people did not have trouble with this.

I tried to install it on my 6-month old X61s. Got "Access Denied" message after install, with roll-back to previous configuraiton.

Tried instructions from Microsoft here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377

Same Access Denied message, AND I lost all networking capabilities. Device Manager showed a blank white window!?!

Did the factory software install (thank goodness that was on my hard drive) and am recovering.

Still don't know what happened.

Exactly the same for me on my X61s. To get back working I used a recent back up to restore "system state" so Im back working and networking is restored.

When I have time I will do a full recovery. What a pain in the a$$

Whats the RECENT / UPDATED consensus for Windows XP Service Pack 3 SP3 on the T61 series of laptops?

I'd like answers specific to the T61 only.
T61 8892-02U: 14.1"SXGA+/2.2C2D/4G/XP|Adv Mini Dock|30" Gateway XHD3000 WQXGA via Dual-link DVI
X61T 7767-96U: 12.1"SXGA+/1.6C2D/3G/Vista|Ultrabase
W510 4319-2PU: 15.6"FHD/i7-720QM/4G/Win7Pro64 (for dad)
T43 1875-DLU: 14.1"XGA/1.7PM-740/1G/XP (Old)

Sorry, can't speak to the T61 question, but my T21 seems very happy at the moment.

Okay. let me drag my soap-box out. I always enjoy the responses to these types of questions. In my opinion it is absolutely vital that you keep your software patched and up to date. It has nothing to do with how your machine runs, it is about closing security vulnerabilities.

I recently read about tests done with un-patched and non-firewall machines being compromised within 5 minutes after going on the web.

It does not matter whether it it is the OS (Linux,Apple users don't think you are immune),browser,Office, Excel, or any other application. Keep them up to date

That being said before you apply any patch/update, backup, backup, backup, and backup you computer.

Did I mention Backup?

Just my opinion, but your welcome to it.

Scott

^ I would normally agree with you, but if you search the fora, you will find numerous reports of SP3 wreaking havoc with systems (wireless in particular). Currently, my wireless networking only works with encryption disabled under SP3, so that's hardly more secure.

Buggy software updates are in some cases worse than no software updates.

Since SP3 is the topic, I will repeat what I wrote in another post since it somewhat applies.

My 600X's sound mysteriously dissappeared about the same time I had the SP3 update pop up. Hours worth of attemps to get the sound back were fruitless, and believe me, I tried everything. Reinstall drivers (XP couldn't find drivers on it's own when the 600X uses windows integrated drivers), uninstall the device and reboot, try several forced drivers, ect... Nothing worked.
Gave up and let SP3 install, rebooted.
XPSP3 found the device and automatically reloaded the device and drivers and was ready to go.
Sound restored.

:??: Go figure. :??:

It's odd. SP3 will work flawlessly on some machines and be a disaster (usually with networking) on others. I have no notion as to the cause.

Currently, I'm running SP3 and can no longer use encryption on my wireless network (WPA-PSK) despite installing the latest Intel drivers and ensuring that the Extensible Authentication Protocol is set to "automatic." Nedless to say, this is suboptimal. I'll hold out until the end of the day; if there is no fix, I'll be returning to SP2 from a backup. It seems that M$ didn't fully test SP3 before unleashing it on the unsuspecting public.

Either that, or SP3 is really Skynet taking over. ;)

Well, I traveled back in time and prevented Judgement Day from happening.

Translation: I reverted to an SP2 backup and will be using that. SP3 is simply to buggy for me to risk playing with it and wasting more of my time.

hmm ... I have installed XP SP3 on 3 thinkpads personally (T60, X24 and X41) and all have been running really well with absolutely no issues ...

My only issue was with the 600X. Two 600e's, a T21, an HPze4805, and several desktops all seem happy after the SP3 install.

It's puzzling. SP3 works fine on some computers and wreaks havoc on the wireless with others. I have no idea why.

I have it on a clean install of XP Pro on a T61, and it's working fine. Can't speak to access connections, since I didn't install it. I use the Atheros wireless client (the a/g card in the T61 uses the Atheros chipset).

I like Access Connections. In fact I like it so much I wish I could install it on some Dell Laptops I have.

WHY?

Being able to CHANGE network, print, host etc settings with a SINGLE CLICK.

Is there any such app out there? Some hack to make TAC work on non TPs.

PS: Does TPAC and other TP stuff on T61 work fine with XP3?

What I used before I settled on ACC was NetSwitcher. The developer does update it every once in a blue moon. http://www.netswitcher.com/

It actually does some things that ACC does not, and vice-versa.

I have had various problems with ACC, that make me think of giving-up on it from time to time. One of the recent ones is its habit of not wanting to give up a static IP from a previously applied profile, when you switch to a DHCP one. (using Ethernet)

It appears that ACC is making DHCP requests even when the profile you are trying to apply is a static IP. It apparently tries to find a DHCP server which will issue it it's previous static IP via DHCP.

Another problem is that ACC obfuscates some network errors. I have found for example that if you are trying to apply a profile with a static IP and you have a duplicate IP already on the segment, ACC will not inform you of this - it just shows "acquiring network address" forever. I had to uninstall ACC on one machine before I could see the native Windows IP stack report there was a duplicate IP on the segment.

I like much of the ACC functionality, although early 4.x releases were full of bugs. 4.52 seems to be not too bad, I'm very curious what the new 5.00 is like. (but don't feel like experimenting with it on any critical machines yet)

I've got SP3 working happily on 5 Thinkpads with no problems at all. To the best of my knowledge, most of SP3 is a roll up of various bug fixes issued after SP2.

Thanks for the reply. I now do remember using Netswitcher AGES back. Probably during the Win98 / Me era.

I'll look it up. I am wondering if there are any competitors / other vendors.
