One year warranty on my T61 expires... how do i upgrade it

#1 Post by HayLo » Tue Apr 29, 2008 7:36 pm

Hello,

I work on a lot of Lenovo's and this question comes up a lot.

"how do i upgrade my warranty".

I know for the older T4x models, you could buy a warranty for your machine, (they came with 3 year warranties). Example, Fru: 41C9180

Lot of good posts I noticed on the forums. I'm familiar with IBM entitlement department. (they want 110 per year).

However, Lot of the new Lenovo's 3000 series as well as thinkpads, only come now with a one year warranty base.

I was hoping that someone had a list of fru's maybe, that i could add to the One Year warranty machines.

I want to upgrade my Ez-Depot warranty to 3 years (including the base one year), or by the year.

Or even, upgrade to the TP warranty (total protection).

I've done some research, but honestly, the paperwork is quite confusing.

Any tips where to start would be greatly appreciated.

your best bet is to call the entitlement department and request a part number list of warranty upgrades.

You can get a 4 years depot warranty upgrade (to 5 years total) for about $240 from Lenovo (41C9174 - you'll have to haggle them down to their best price of $240 - they'll start off telling you it's over $300). Or you can buy it from PROVANTAGE.COM where there are other options available.

I believe costcentral.com still sells warranty upgrades as well, with a small discount, if you have the correct FRU number.
now: X61, T42p
before: 600E, T23, X20, T40, X40, X31, T60
FS: Travel Bezel, 100GB drive (OEM Lenovo)

@ HayLo:

You may (perhaps!) find some useful info in the threads T60p 5-Year Onsite Upgade Refused By Lenovo (see my post of Mon Mar 10, 2008 1:33 pm and in particular the links pointed to therein) and warranty extension where you will read that e.g. the shop "Affinity Systems" will offer IBM's/Lenovo's (own!) warranties substantially cheaper than if buying directly at IBM/Lenovo (see the posts by Tim M towards the end of the thread, incl. the one of Fri Jan 18, 2008 6:48 am).

So, to summarize: First, you find (= you find yourself!) the warranty extension (FRU) you want, then 2) You Google around for the best price, and then 3) Order! Simple as that! :-)

When I first tried to order my 1 -> 5 year depot warranty upgrade (41C9174) for $240, I was also told it was "not a valid warranty upgrade" and was offered a 4 year depot upgrade for over $390! I told them that is's on the Lenovo Thinkpad web site as available with a new computer and is available on numerous reseller web sites. I eventually was able to get them to honor the purchase and after about 3 weeks it is now reflected on my system warranty lookup page at Lenovo.com

You have to be persistent, though!

If you used your credit card to buy it, check with the credit card company to see if they automatically give you an extended warranty (12 months). Mine does.

A few months ago I purchased a two-year warranty extension for my T42p from Provantage.com. They are a little less expensive than IBM.

Double check that. Many credit card issuers will not double the warranty on "computers, laptops"... fine print
