new laptop file transfers

#1 Post by joe19812 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 9:22 am

I just upgraded from a T42 to a T61. Is it possible to transfers files between computers by connecting an ethernet wire between the them? I wanted to see if this was possible/easier before reverting to using a USB drive to transfer everything.

Yes, it's possible. You would need a "crossover" ethernet cable (not a regular cable) and you would need to set the IPs and subnet mask manually. Alternatively, you can use a router between them - just set both computers to share files and then copy from the T4x to the T6x.

don't need to. You can use any cable and plug them both into the systems. Both systems support MID-X (or is that MDI-X) that will automatically figure out how to connect each other.

Since they both have gigabit ports it should be pretty fast. You will need to setup a share on one of them (my documents or something) and then just go on the othe rmachine and copy the whole thing out to your new one.

This is a small How-to I wrote for connecting two computers using a wired or a wireless connection.

Interesting, I knew most current routers and switches supported auto-MDIX, but I didn't know computers did. Just set up the network communication as described in the link above and you should be good to go (or use a router and you won't have to mess around with manual network configurations).
