SOLVED :) - Pressing mute button -> Freezing XP :(

#1 Post by neukrisz » Thu May 01, 2008 7:31 am

Hey Guys,

I have a problem on my X61s.

When I press the MUTE button then the OS freezing immediately, otherwise the Vol_down & Vol_up working right...

I tried to reinstall the audio driver, but no any change :(

Have you any idea? (I really don't want to reinstall the whole OS)

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Chris

Try the software way: Locate the volume control icon in the system tray. Left click once on it. Check "Mute".

If that freezes your system, then there is a basic problem with your installation. The volume control icon is part of Windows and deep inside it. If it is hosed, you probably have some, or all of, viruses, spyware, data corruption and so on. You can try scanning for problems, but there is a good chance you might have to rebuild.

If the software way does not freeze your system, then you may have a hardware problem.

Did you recently update the sound drivers?

The most recent sound drivers give all sorts of problems to me - on my X61T, they disabled the microphone and caused all sorts of weird problems with the mute key.

Check the end of this thread for a solution, and make sure to install the Microsoft KB888111 patch.

Many thanks!

This was a driver problem...

The right/working version is: 5.10.1.5520 http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67816
The fail driver's version was: 5.10.1.5670  BEWARE!!!

Now its working perfectly ;)
Thanks again! :)
