Looking for Sierra Wireless MC8775 or better?!

#1 Post by netrider » Thu May 01, 2008 10:42 am

Hey guys,

I'm looking for an upgrade for my thinkpad x61s with integrated umts from horizon.
I would like to use HSDPA in Europe, but I do not find any store, worldwide, which sells these Sierra Wireless embedded modules for Thinkpads without any SimLock.
Does anybody of you know a shop?

thank you!

Lenovo spare parts will sell you MC8775, which according to reports will be almost for sure unlocked, even though stated as "Vodafone". No guarantees though.

Second option is to buy AirCard 875U, 880U or 881U USB modem, disassemble it and use the card you find inside it. This will however require using patched BIOS to accept the card and for *60 series ThinkPads, hardware wireless switch (on front of the machine) might not work, AccessConnections on/off control might not work even after patch. For *61 it looks better. In all cases, Sierra Wireless 3G Watcher application will provide you with full control of the card.

It's been reported that you can order MC87xx modules from Fujitsu-Siemens as spare parts for their notebooks. Again will need patched BIOS, everything from previous paragraph applies.

EDIT: For European user, MC8780 is the best (receive diversity and 7.2/2.0Mbps speeds), followed by MC8781 (7.2/2.0 speeds but no diversity for 2100MHz) and the worst of these three is MC8775 with speeds 3.6M/384kbps and no diversity.
Diversity allows to use two antennas to improve signal strength.

Alas the only FRU listed for the X61/X61s is the MC8775.

Hello!

How is it possible to teach X61T to accept mc8785v? I'd like to talk over the GSM.

Thanx

In Germany (as in the UK) you can purchase FRU's online from IBM or you can also call: 06131 84 4508 - In both case's you will need the FRU part number. (42T0901??? - Sierra Wireless MC8775 - according to a few post's in the T6x forum, it will be more than likely Unlocked too!). Also keep an eye on ebay, as they do appear from time to time at usually half the price (or less) of the Lenovo/IBM pricing scheme's!

MC8775 works well with the X300 and TP61. Sorry don't know about X6x but I had a AT&T 881U as well and read here that you can take apart and use the card inside. I thought someone may want to know what's in it. Mine contained MC8781 with the AUX connection. MC8775 has no AUX.

Just FYI
