Lost my memory - sort of

In my X60 I have 2 x 2Gig memory sticks (3Gig usable from XP). In my newly aquired X61 I have 2 x 1Gig memory sticks.
Swap them around and both machines now have 2 Gig each Pull the 2Gig sticks out one at a time and one is 'faulty' i.e. the X61 doesn't boot up with it. Put it back in the X60 and it works fine. So now both have 3Gig each. I had wanted 4Gig in the X61 for when I start to test out Vista64/Windows2008 server.

Anyone care to explain what just happened to me ? All the memory is PC5300,non-ECC etc etc

slot 0 has to be populated with a module otherwise your system will not boot.   i believe slot 0 is on the right as viewed from the bottom.

i think that the machine identify the primary and secondary memory slots.

Should have mentioned. When I pulled the memory I put the other one in the first slot on the X61. But even if I hadden't, why would the X61 only see 2 Gig when 4Gig was installed ?
