T61p, Vista SP1: SD Card reader disappeared?!

#1 Post by hellosailor » Fri May 02, 2008 6:32 pm

Everything was working fine, and I even moved some files into the SD card after SP1 had been installed and the system rebooted, so SP1 shouldn't be the culprit.

But the SD card reader appears in the device mangler, the little green light next to it goes on and off properly, and "My Computer" proudly insists there no longer is any card reader or card present in the computer.

The driver is current, the system has been rebooted, I've tried a second known good card...

Anyone have any ideas why my computer is ostracizing my SD card reader? Or vice versa?

[LATER]

OK, this is creepy. Rebooted cold again "just in case" and still no signs of the "D:" drive, which is where the SD card used to be. Decided to run a command session (CMD) to see if the Dumb Operating System emulator had any thoughts about the drive.

Funny thing, D: was right there with no problems and I moved files back from it, using the old DOS commands. then I went to look at My Computer again...VOILA! There's the D" drive showing up looking awfully smug and pretending it had never left.

Hide and seek? hell no, my computers aren't allowed to play games without adult supervision.

"Curiouser and curiouser, said Alice" and I fully agree with her.

Sometimes external devices just need a quick kick to make My Computer realize they're there. I usually go to the Disk Manager for this. I would advise you install SP2, it seems to have a bit less trouble with such things.

Truk, you're in serious trouble now. Don't you realize the terms of your NDA strictly prohibit public mention of Vista SP2 and other unreleased products? I'd figure you have at most twenty-four hours before the Microsoft Legal Police come around to arrest you. Flee while you still can! <GD&R>

No, we have no Vista SP2, so I can't use it. Yes, we JUST GOT SP1, which is why I mentioned that.

We also don't have Disk Manager, we have the Disk Management Console, and while the SD card shows up just fine there--there's no "Kick it" option, and the card still doesn't show up in My Computer or the other displays of drives in the systems. It went away again after the last use.

XD I think I was a bit tired at the time I wrote that! For some reason I thought we were talking XP... Nevermind the idiocy I sometimes spew, sorry!

Well, the computer just as mysteriously seems happy now. Except, after any cold start it becomes very proud of itself for detecting new hardware and asking me if I want to help it find and install the new (WFD? WPD?) something or other...file system to support the new hardware, which is the memory card/reader.

I'm going to try disabling Spybot resident--apparently that also blocks Windows Updates from installing. A bit TOO protective.
