The Global Model Plus T43p will have a 4 year CCR/OS Warranty. Not sure about the benefits to the end user really. I think it must be some sort of "buy-back" strategy on IBM's behalf.

Well, I questioned this, from the ThinkPad Brand, and was told - "The 4yr warranty models will be the GMP models only. I haven't received any further details on these as yet and as normal, all announcements are subject to change."

What speed difference would you expect from a new T43 vs. a similar T42 if all other things were equal?

I'm holding off buying a T42 2378fvu because the T43s will be available soon. A T43 2668-4EU seems to fill a similar place in the Work Horse line.

The T43 2668-4EU comes with 14.1” SXGA+, Pentium M processor 750 (1.8GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache), Win XP Pro, 40GB 5400rpm, 6-cell Li-Ion, modem, Gigabit, ESS, M22-64MB VRAM Centrino a/b/g, 512MB, Combo, Bluetooth, FPR.

Thanks Cronus71 for sharing the new model specs.

Edit: The Inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20197
posted an Intel Roadmap showing that the Pentium 750 will have 1.86MHz
Intel will introduce the 770, a 2MB 2.13GHz Pentium M with a 533MHz bus at $640, as well as a 2AGHz 533MHz 2MB (760) chip at $420, a 1.86GHz "750" at $295, a 1.73GHz "740" at $240, and a 1.60GHz 533MHz chip - the "730" at $210
.

Well my 30 day return privilege has come and gone two days ago. I was seriously considering returning my 2379-R9U considering the T43's are just around the corner but this T42 has been such a pleasure to use I decided to keep it. For my needs I doubt the improvements will mean enough to me to give up such a great machine. The display is absolutely beautiful, when I put it up to my new Powerbook it makes the Powerbooks display look fuzzy and dim, thats how clear and bright the 15" flexview display is. Everythings running fast and smooth, all in all a great experience.

IBM won't have regulatory approval for the sale until April 2005. So in the meantime, can rest assured that the T43/T43p will be produced in Q1 as the last of the IBM line... :) Figure 2005Q1 ThinkPads could become collectors' items... lol

I'd be interested in the next generation X-series as well. Just today IBM Canada unloaded a few top of the line X31s (15) and older T-series stock. Makes me think that something is coming down the pipe, sooner than we may think?

Wonder what's in place for the X-series. The X40 for $999Cdn today was an excellent deal, but I just can't justify purchasing one other than to satisfy my own want. Already have a T42.

My next Thinkpad will be the smaller X-series, I know that much, to compliment the T42 I have now. Just not now.....grrr.

Everything I have read in the news says that ICH6-M and its associated goodies (Azalia audio, etc) are part of the Alviso chipset.

For example: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20344 on December 22nd 2004 reported:
Sonoma will bring DDR 2, PCI Express marchitecture, S-ATA drives and better audio to Pentium M laptops. It will feature Azalia-like high definition audio.
And I know that HDD makers have had their SATA notebook drives prepped for some time.

Where did you learn that the T43 won't use ICH6-M?
Conmee wrote:The new T43 machines will continue to support PCMCIA/CardBus, but in what are now two CardBus slots, the upper slot will support both 34mm/54mm ExpressCard cards, while the lower slot will support CardBus/PCMCIA. In addition, there will be no initial support of either SATA or "Azalia" (advanced sound) which will be added when the upcoming ICH6-M is introduced as part of a "T50" refresh in 2H2005. :)

CCR = Customer Carry-in Repair

No idea what OS is though. Could be Overseas or Operating System

I see that there are different GA dates depending on the type of graphics card. However, I'm confused. What is the difference between discrete video (GPU) and integrated memory? I assumed that one is "integrated" with the motherboard and the other is a separate video card, but I wasn't sure. Are the higher end ones discrete? Thanks.

AFAIK the discrete GPUs are the ATI Cards (X300/X600) - integrated cards are intel based (e.g. 810 or 855 integrated gfx chipsets)

EDIT: the integrated chipsets use the system RAM and doesn't have own RAM

I've been browsing these forums for a couple weeks now but I finally decided to register so I could post in the T43 thread. This looks like a great notebook and the upgraded GPU sounds interesting, but what really caught my attention was the supposed high-quality audio arriving with ICH6-M (in "T50"?).

Finally, decent sound from a notebook. The next question: what kind of interface would such a unit use? I'm hoping that there would be some sort of optical option but that might be wishful thinking.

It would only be decent sound if you matched the sound system up to decent speakers. Unfortunately, you can almost count on the TP built-in speakers to be craptastic.

I don't think anyone is expecting laptop speakers to sound phenomenal. I guess the real interest here is that when using the laptop in a fixed environment (i.e. on your desk, at home, etc) you could connect to a set of speakers or a stereo. Alternatively, when on the road you could use a good pair of headphones for listening to music or watching a DVD, all with respectable sound quality.

By googling, and translating, "thinkpad t43" you can find news of the upcoming T43. tech.tom.com/1624/1766/2005110-152105.html in part says Intel will oficially announce the T43 on Jan. 16, 2005.

They expect the T43 to ship on March 8. The T43p is expected in April.
Intel in January 16th officially will issue oneself the Alviso chip group product (915PM/915GM) this also will mean the brand-new Sonoma migration overhead construction walked front, the Sonoma overhead construction can the present table model computer newest PCI-E overhead construction, DDR2, SATA and so on the complete belt enter moves inside the platform, yesterday Sony Corporation already in advance announced own based on the Sonoma overhead construction design many patterns notebook product, regarding this we already did the related report, today we again attained some rousing restricted data, believed can even more lose face compared to yesterday content, Because this we see is IBM based on the Sonoma overhead construction design product: Thinkpad T43/T43P.
T43s will have an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 or a M22-64MB VRAM (Mobility Radeon X300)

T43ps will have a M24GL-128 MBVRAM (mobility Radeon X600)[/url]

I believe that information is incorrect because the Alviso chipset is supposed to already have the high definition integrated audio.

However, without concrete specifications, its impossible to tell for sure.

OK I'm confused now. There are some people saying that GA for discrete GPU's will be mid-February. Now this guy is says it could be as late as April. Which is it?

Esteban here. I have no inside knowlege.

I Googled "thinkpad t43" . There are a number of Asian web pages describing the IBM Thinkpad T43 with expected release dates and configurations. I read the (translated) information and passed on dates from the source referenced in my above post.

As Google translated:
The IBM plan officially issues oneself the Thinkpad T series new product in January 18th: Thinkpad T43 and Thinkpad T43P, these two section products all will select the Alviso chip group design, will select 533mHz main line standard on the processor new style Pentium M 730/750/760/770, PCI-E will reveal the card main line, the DDR2 memory module as well as the SATA standard 2.5 inches hard disks, will select Sonamo overhead construction design Thinkpad T43 and T43P naturally can create IBM T series performance new high.

Thinkpad T43 and T43P will be able to select PCI-E overhead construction in the graph module M22GL (MOBILITY RADEON X300), M24GL (MOBILITY RADEON X600) the graph module.

At present Thinkpad T43 and T43P officially goes on the market the date does not have the official announcement, but looks from the Japanese aspect news, Thinkpad T43 will start in March 8th to supply goods, but Thinkpad T43P will have only then to be able to supply goods to April.
