Currently when Watcher starts, it says "searching" ..forever... But before I put the Lenovo device-id in its Kext/driver, it immediately said "device not found". So now it recognizes the card, but I don't know if it gets stuck in talking to device or finding the network. I am going to work on it today, got the newer 2.0.10 watcher and drivers, and also check AT command responsiveness. Will keep posted. If it ends up being power-on problem, I'll follow your two suggestions (look for linux ibm acpi-module and port it to mac, or tap pin-20). Thanks.

Hi,

I have a thinkpad t61p and W500. I am in Australia and i believe our cards are locked to 2100mhz for one of the providers here does anyone have any info on this?

I would like to run it on telstra who are i believe 850?

Is there anyway to flash the card for this and where would i find such a firmware?

Hi,

Im in Australia and Ive got the same issue.

The Lenovo supplied MC8775 cards are referenced as a Vodafone card in the FRU.

In my previous posts you'll see that although the cards are unlocked to work with 3, Optus, Vodafone and Telstra, but they are band locked to only work with the 2100 UMTS and 900/1800 GSM bands.

You can get it working with Telstra but it will use the 3Telstra (UMTS 2100) network and not the Telstra (UMTS 850) NextG network.

Im also trying to run the card on Telstra's NextG network but haven't had any success.

will any of you be kind enough to send the Cisco firmware. I am using a X61. I am aware that it is missing 1 antenna wiring for 7.2 mbps. I want to upgrade to higher sensitivity for the Sierra HSDPA modem.

Hello, I have the same issue here but with my sim I get no signal at all from telstra. The modem and sim are detected but after long searching no signal is found. Could someone please be kind enough to tell me in noob speak how to apply the firmware for the sierra modem in linux. Is there no windows program to do this? I've been forced to use Vista instead of Linux because that's the only way I can be on line. I'd also be interested to know why the connector for auxiliary isn't included on the card 'cos I noticed on the Sierra site picture that the mc8775 had both connectors but the one I got from Lenovo Australia only has a connector for main.

Wont update my MC8775.

It says something along the lines of 'you already have the latest firmware'.

Hi guys, it's good to have the firmware to try, but no good if there is no utility to do the firmware update.

I been searching/Google around for a Binary Update Tool to update MC8775, but can't find anything.

Can someone shine some light on how to update/flash the new/updated firmware onto MC8775 miniPCI card?

The MC8775 is made by Sierra Wireless. Use Sierra 3G Watcher.

I managed to install this firmware and still dont have 850 UMTS support.

On a more important note this firmware has installed four network profiles that I cant delete.

Ive tried manually deleting these profiles in the watcher application but they seem to be installed to the flash of the card.

Ive tried to reflash the card with different firmware, but as a part of the firmware update it backs up operator settings and they are retained.

Is there a way delete these profiles?

Great Thread and thanks to the contributors.

I got a nice bump using ATT/Cingular.
I went from under 1Mbps to 1.7Mbps.

I'd like to know how my speed compares with others using ATT/Cingular in the US?

With regards to the 850MHz problem, Have you tested the sim in another 3g device supporting the 850Mhz band? Could it be that the Sim will only work with the networks own supplied devices? or is there an additional setting required within the software?

Are you trying to use a BigPond Broaband SIM or a Telstra Mobile Broadband SIM, for NextG access?

thanks for the responses.

im using a nextg prepaid sim.

i previously uninstalled the watcher application and deleted all registry entries relating to sierra and telstra.

maybe i missed a few. I'll try those listed and let you know how i go.

I upgraded to firmware in my x300 with the mc8775 to H2_0_7_1BMCAP and it worked like a charm! Got 7.2 mbit connection speed to my ISP and according to speedtest.net 4.2mbit/0.3mbit (about double the performance from old firmware).

The firmware H2_0_7_1BMCAP can be found in breki196:s post in this thread. If you install the Sierra wireless 3G watcher (found on sierra wireless homepage) the application used for the fw-update (binupdater.exe) can be found in the application folder.

I've uninstalled the watcher application and removed all remnants of Sierra Wireless installations but im still getting the following profiles which I cant delete.

WWAN - Telstra.Pcpack
WWAN - Telstfra.Datapack
WWAN - Telstra.Internet

Its causing issues as I cant set my provider (3) as a default profile and it doesn't allow my provider to appear in the watchers drop down list.

I've installed SIM's from two other providers (optus and vodafone) and Im able to edit and delete the auto configured profiles easily within watcher but I cant do this for the telstra profiles.

Ive tried flashing to get rid of the profiles but they seem to be retained as the flash program displays a 'backing up settings' screen during the process.

Also try deleting (after un-installing/deleting the above) C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers [swnc8u12, swnc8u55, swumx12, swumx55...and/or additional Sierra Wireless drivers in this area!], then install this version of the Sierra Wireless MC87xx 3G Watcher Build 3.0 1822 from the FSC website typing "watcher" in the "Full text search Software" box.

EDIT: FSC has removed the Sierra Wireless MC87xx 3G Watcher Build 3.0 1822.

thanks for the response Peak2Peak.

I'll give it a go in the next night or so.

I'll go through the uninstall of the watcher and lenovo driver applications and delete all relevant registry entries again.

One thing that concerns me is that I cant edit or delete the profiles in watcher. the profile settings are greyed out and this makes me think that they are in flash.

Also something seems borked as watcher is reporting v1.93 firmware instead of the latest v2 firmware I flashed.

Is there some type of reset utility for this card?

I've found that Sierra Wireless are the most unhelpful company when it comes to service. they keep palming you off to lenovo or your wireless carrier.

I have not come across any sort of Sierra Wireless reset utility as yet, but it may be only available to OEM developers etc - Like yourself I have tried contacting Sierra Wireless directly by phone asking questions on OEM Embedded Modules only to be pointed to the OEM suppliers/carriers.

There aren't any free lunches in the OEM product supply business form any manufacturer, so that's part of the deal when you buy an OEM product.

If you want Sierra support, buy a Sierra retail product (usually for more $$$, as there is no OEM vendor to subsidise the hardware cost through other aspects of a goods/services bundle).
