Data compression on a T42 with XP

#1 Post by vma2408 » Mon May 05, 2008 6:32 am

My T42 has a 40GB HDD in it, onto which I would like to place an extra (data) partition. I noticed, when I defragmented it, that the utility didn't compress C:, but left its contents spread all over the partition. Is there a utility in XP which will perform compression - I haven't managed to find one after an initial search? There will otherwise be insufficient room for another partition on the HDD.
I vaguely remember that Norton used to have a utility which did this, but that was back in the (bad old :? ) days of 2000-Pro (perhaps XP - or IBM - specificly prohibits comression??) Thanks.

I believe any good partition resizer (like PartitionMagic, dunno about free ones) would automatically move the data for you to make space for the new partition. And it's not called compression... that probably is throwing off your searches.

I've used Partition Magic before with both good and bad results. Be forwarned that before attempting to resize your drive with ANY utility, you back up your data to another place... CD, DVD, another computer, etc. If the resizing doesn't go right, you won't be able to boot and you will more than likely lose your data.

I think that what I want is called "compacting"; if I could do that I'd be able to repartition with linux. Thanks for your help.
