Does X40 have reserved video memory?

#1 Post by tbessie » Tue Jun 01, 2004 1:55 pm

According to reviews of integrated video controllers I've read, the X40's controller uses main memory for it's video memory. However when I read some of the X40's specs it says "32MB Video Memory" (or 64MB, I can't remember). Anyway, it makes it *seem* like it is not using main memory.

Does anyone know for sure?

The video memory is dynamically allocated from the main memory. It only uses as much as it needs. Theoretically, it can allocate up to 64mb of memory, but I've only seen my X40 use up to 17mb for 1600x1200x32bit.

Too bad about that...

... not that it's taking up much memory, but that it's fighting the CPU for memory access cycles. Slows the thing down. Why couldn't they have an integrated video controller with it's own memory on a separate bus? [censored] them all! :-)
