Linux on external HDD

#1 Post by whatsinthename » Sat Dec 11, 2004 4:18 pm

Do you think I can setup a linux system on my external hdd and use it?

I have a custom built 250 gig external hdd and want to make a linux partition on it?

yeah sure you can. all you have to do is make the external hd bootable. i had linux running from my thumb drive 1 yr back but then had no use for it so now i just use it to store random stuff.

if you run a search on google you'll be able to find alot of linux "flavors" that will also have step by step instuctions on how to do what you are asking.

cheers :)

Definitely possible, but I don't think any distribution has as smooth install for such a case. See also http://www.simonf.com/usb/

Probably the easiest way is to just put the image of a Flash-stick-linux on the harddisk. But then, that will not have a partition size of 250 gb... Requires some hacking to make it work, so if you just want to try out linux the first time I suggest you go with a knoppix cd. If you know what you are doing, please try and tell us how it went.
