Network Attached Storage
Hello!
I am interested in buying a really cheap computer and a few high volume SATA drives and making my own NAS box.
What I need help with is to know what I need to do this. What type of motherboard does it need? What type of controller cards work best? etc.
Thanks for any help!

Have a look at http://www.freenas.org/.
They have a hardware compatibility list of sorts at http://www.freenas.org/index.php?option ... s_hardware.

Those look like a lot of work and take a powerful machine just to do a NAS. Take a look at naslite. It uses far less processor and memory to do the job and is much easier to setup.
I have had one of these boxes running for over 5 years now.

Another vote for naslite. I set one up for a friend here 2 years back and its still running with absolutely NO issues whatsoever.

It all depends on what particular purpose you want to use the storage for!

You are right. If you need to password files, folders or drives naslite is not for you. If you just need to attach a hard drive to the network with no big frills then naslite is for you.
As far as performance goes, mine is limited by the 3c905 nic in it. But it runs at full speed for the nic all the time. It would be much faster if I put in a gigabit nic. It is fast enough for me. A 650 meg file moves in a little over a minute.
