VERY Impressed with Lenovo

#1 Post by Miller88 » Wed May 07, 2008 11:46 am

I brought my T60 in last week for a new Optical drive. Some ... unnecessary things happened at the repair center and suddenly my laptop that got dropped off for an optical drive was completely Dead - I was told that I needed a new motherboard and CPU ... even though they worked fine until I dropped it off.

It eventually turned into a ----ing match and we were pointing fingers. It resulted in the service center saying my warranty was void because of what I did.

The laptop got sent to Lenovo

Lenovo replaced all components and did not void my warranty ... I still have a warranty. :D

With that said, my next laptop will be a thinkpad. I was considering a Dell (Love my dells) but looks like Lenovo converted me back to thinkpads.

What kind of service center was this?

I hope to never have to bring anything there.

What did they say YOU did?

It was the on campus Lenovo service center at a Thinkpad University.

They tore the laptop apart to replace my optical drive ... not sure why but ...
  • Thermal compound "ate" CPU ... they forgot to put it on when they replaced the motherboard back in October. I am certain that Lenovo did not replace the CPU but I will not be opening it up to see again. If they voided warranty for opening up laptop it would have been no problem. But giving me this excuse was unbelievable. Especially since I have used this compound A LOT and it hasn't eaten anything else.
  • Incompatible Memory - Hynix 1gb stick of memory. Worked fine of me. (I would not have been mad if warranty voided for this)
  • I "shoved" a wire into the laptop. Apparently when they took out my motherboard to replace my Optical drive they tore out a wire that I "shoved" in there and ruined the motherboard.

I will admit to what I did - but the laptop worked fine when I dropped it off. Laptop still has a warranty and I'm happy.

As far as I know, the only things that Lenovo replaced were motherboard and optical drive.

I don't care for their gorilla repair style.

I would stay away, far away, if your ThinkPad ever requires service again.

Does opening it up and say replacing hard drive and memory void your warranty?

not at all.   all keyboards, all hard drives, all memory, some palm rests, and some wireless cards are considered CRU (customer-replaceable unit) parts and will not void your warranty.
