SP3 broke AC and my network drivers on my T42. There's another thread about SP3 excitement in the Windows OS forum.

I got the newer-dated file as was pointed to by this site, downloaded the SP and applied to my Desktop (no issues) and then applied it to my T41. So far no issues. Access IBM is working fine, Access Connections is working fine, and the Atheros wireless is working well. I had heard SP3 caused issues with the Atheros drivers that could be corrected by reinstalling the wireless driver, but as it happens, it seems like everything worked.
It appears that SP3 has broken the traditional Windows Update site. Vista doesn't even use that site, so Microsoft may be forcing me away from the traditional site.

Hi, for what it's worth
Well, I've installed SP3 in 4 machines already, 2 Thinkpads (a T40 and a T42), another notebook and one desktop. The only glitch was with the desktopp during the first reboot phase ... it stayed with the 'please wait' screen for always, but a manual reboot fixed things and it's working perfectly fine now.

Access IBM (not AC!) has a problem with the latest Flash player versions. How to fix it: uninstall the Flash player plugin and install Flash player version 8.0.22.0. It worked on my computer.

Disable the animation on the opening screen and everything else works fine. There is a check box to do this off the menu tray iconSlamX wrote:I installed XP SP3 andnow Access IBM won't display any menu items and automatic driver updates willnow not run.

wifi not working since sp3 install
I have thinkpad 42p.
When I installed sp3 it caused access connections to work wierdly, not able to turn on or off wireless networking. In fact, I could not connect to my wireless network, and received contradictory messages such as wireless connected and turn on wireless. Even thought eh wireless light was on, it was obviously not working and could not find a wlan
even though there are two 25 ft. from me.
I tried updating and reinstalling TP access connections, still no go.
I had to do a system restore to get back on the INTERNET.
Thank God that worked.
Any suggestions?
I might just have to wait for some new updates from Lenovo, or some instructions from lenovo until install sp3 again.
I called lenovo service but an Indian chap told me they don't give tech support on software.
well.......

I have seen this issue in prior posts, which kept me away from SP3 until final. However, the final version worked on my T41 with Atheros card (IBM 11 a/b/g version 1 (I think) - Driver 4.1.2.156). I have had SP3 running with wireless and everything else running fine since about last Thursday.davekung wrote:I have a similar issue with SP3 and WLAN with Atheros a/b/g card on T41. It will not get pass in "acquiring network address" screen. Reverted back by uninstall SP3.
I confess I do not know why some of us have no problems and others do have problems on seemingly the same environment.

SP3?
Where did you guys get the SP3?
Should the upgrade be done via Windows Update?
Thanks in advance!

Re: SP3?
Many (probably most) people use Windows Update. I prefer to download the service pack (freely avalailable at the Microsoft download site), save it for future use and use on my other machines, and then update from the download. My way works for me, but not for most people. ... JDHulrich.von.lich wrote:Where did you guys get the SP3?

Re: SP3?
Thanks jdhurst, I will look for it at the Microsoft download center. I was not informed when XP3 was released. I also prefer to have downloaded files to save some time in case I have to reinstall them.
Installed WXP Service Pack 3 on a T43 and two T30s with Windows XP Pro, and an R51e with Windows XP Home. No issues or problems at all.
All units were running fresh installs from their respective Rescue and Recovery partitions (I backed up the Documents and Settings folders and other user stuff on the hard drive) plus autopatcher (which requires a base XPSP2 install).
The T30s had Windows XP (no service pack) in the R&R partition so I had to install SP2 first.

Re: XP Service Pack 3
I think you need to, download and install System updater 3.1.3 first (you will need to have .net framework installed, if you don't go to http://www.autopatcher.com and use their nifty utility. You will need to be online so it can download the patches from MS).SlamX wrote:I installed XP SP3 andnow Access IBM won't display any menu items and automatic driver updates willnow not run.

I just installed SP3 on my t42 (atheros a/b/g) and had the exact same problem. Solved it by setting the "Extensible Authentication Protocol Service" to automatic.davekung wrote:I have a similar issue with SP3 and WLAN with Atheros a/b/g card on T41. What does this setting do and where can I find it (in AC somewhere)? Out of curiosity, did you also have issues with your wired ethernet connection as well?dr. zoidberg wrote:I just installed SP3 on my t42 (atheros a/b/g) and had the exact same problem. That is a new system service that is included with some of the new networking features in SP3. To set it to automatic do this:Tim M wrote:What does this setting do and where can I find it (in AC somewhere)? 1. click start->run and type services.msc
2. scroll through the list and double click the Extensible Authentication Protocol Service entry.
3. re-start
4. after re-starting, it should show the status as Started
As for what the service does, google told me this:
Code: Select all
The Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) service provides network authentication in such scenarios as 802.1x wired and wireless, VPN, and Network Access Protection (NAP). EAP also provides application programming interfaces (APIs) that are used by network access clients, including wireless and VPN clients, during the authentication process. If you disable this service, this computer is prevented from accessing networks that require EAP authentication
Required For:
* Wired AutoConfig
* WLAN AutoConfig
