500GB HDDs - where?

#1 Post by mfbernstein » Wed May 07, 2008 10:30 pm

Samsung announced their 500GB Spinpoint M6 (2.5", 9.5mm high) back in early March. Two months later, no news and no drives. Any ideas when/where the darn things will appear (or any other 500GB 2.5" 9.5mm drives for that matter)? Thanks,

Just did a Google search myself, and came up with nothing :(.
All I got were reviews of the product, maybe not until Q3/4 for purchase?

Alright, more careful searching on the Samsung website reveals: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/ ... 56&tab=fea#
I don't know if it will work though?
Here is the Samsung press release saying its shipping it anyway: http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site ... ewsLang=en

Beginning of April they promised that they'd ship to retailers a month later. Truth in advertising

No, the first link you have is for one of their 3.5" models. It should be listed with the other Spinpoint M drives, but it isn't. Aside from the press release and two e-Shops that look fraudulent, I can find no info. anywhere on the actual drive and its availability.

I guess when they claimed they were shipping it in March, they were using a new meaning for the word 'shipping'.

Oh well, thanks for looking around.

(I've been waiting to upgrade from 250GB, which is basically full, for months, but 320GB really doesn't seem like much of an upgrade.)

If you need that much storage you might want to look for an external fw hdd. Up to 1TB and Fedex-ing it beats any network in transfer speed

Probably adopting the old IBM marketing ploy of shipping on "the 95th of March" 8)

It would appear that the 500Gb Samsung 2.5" 9.5mm drives are finally shipping... kinda. OWC and emac shops are selling them today with one catch-you have to buy it within an external On-The-Go storage solution for $309.99. You can easily remove the drive from the portable shell that has both USB and an e-sata port. Guess if you are replacing the internal Thinkpad drive, you have somewhere to go with it. Plus it comes with a case, cables, power adapter and backup/HDD utility software so not a bad package.

There are other interface options for $319.99 (Firewire/USB 2.0) and one for FW400/800/USB2.0 for $349.99.
