How long does it take to replace a X31 screen/keyboard etc?
How long does it take to replace a X31 screen/keyboard etc?
I'm having a terrible time getting a refund for a hopelessly damaged X31 off a truly bizarre seller on eBay (you can read the full horror story here: http://urban75.org/x31.html ).
A week after he received the returned laptop, he's now claiming that I managed to somehow replace the LCD screen, keyboard and wi-fi in the two hours it was in my possession (I mailed the thing straight back).
Apart from the fact I wouldn't know how to replace the screen on any computer if you paid me, does anyone know how long it would actually take to replace the "screen, keyboard wifi card etc" on a X31?
I'm assuming that it's quite a big job that would take a trained engineer a considerable amount of time. Would I be right?

I read about your demise in another thread. Sorry you have to deal with such a yo-yo!
However, to do what you're asking would take less than 20 minutes to do everything. The keyboard only has 4 screws that secure it, and then out it comes after removing the interface connector... less than 2 minutes... and that's with you taking your time. Removing and replacing the LCD takes a little longer, but only because there are more screws to remove. If its the entire LCD and not just the screen, it would take me only about 10 minutes. If its the actual LCD screen, add 5 more minutes. I'm not trying to brag here, I've done this so many times it's already simple for me. I think anyone who's done this before will agree.
Of course, if you've never done it before, it'll take longer simply because you would have to follow the HMM procedure for every little thing... and most of your time would be due to reading.

I replaced the LCD cover on my x31 Monday which does take a little longer than replacing just the LCD but I will say that I had never done it on an x31. To replace just the LCD would have taken around 30 minutes following the Hardware Maint Manual Carefully. I would say if you have done it before like makai the time would be relative to the number of times you have replaced one.
For me to do all that was noted, wireless, LCD, keyboard, would be less than an hour following the HMM. So it is very possible.
To bad about your ebay experience. It would seem any rational person would see through that guys weirdness.
More reason to buy here in the Marketplace.

The first time I stripped down to the LCD on my X31 was because Lenovo had pinched one of the wires when they repaired the LCD with a new one. I was wondering why the LCD frame wasn't sitting just right, so I had to disassemble it to fix it.
After that, I disassembled quite a few more times only because I own 2 X31s and recently, I bought 2 used, but in very good condition, LCD covers from a forum member here and I was swapping covers to get the best I could into my normal user X31. It's beautiful now!!!
After rebuilding the 2nd X31, I found that after all the swapping, one of the snaps on the LCD frame wouldn't snap very well, so I had to disassemble it again to swap the cover.
I guess with all the work I've done on both X31s, I no longer need to even look at the HMM and that's the reason I can do it as quickly as I estimated.
