Where's the big screen?
Where's the big screen?
Is there a recommendable laptop our there with a 17 inch screen? People don't seem to think much of the Ideapads.
Thanks

Re: Where's the big screen?
I saw a very positive report on a Dell Precision 17" model with a bright, matte WUXGA UltraSharp panel. I don't know about Dell's mechanical quality, though. I believe that several people here have complained that with some Dell notebooks, the hinges gave in pretty soon.
Edit: i just saw that the 17" Dell Precision has fan louvres on the right side of the notebook. If the notebook blows out warm air through these fan louvres, i would probably not like such a layout when using a mouse with my right hand.

I saw a good write-up on a Gateway 17" gaming notebook in PC Magazine. As I recall, the only downside they reported was poor battery life, but I suppose that's to be expected with a screen of that size and a powerful machine.
NotebookReview also has a pretty favorable review of Dell's Inspiron 1720 at http://www.notebookreview.com/default.a ... piron+1720. I usually hesitate to recommend an Inspiron because I've never found their build quality to be very solid, and the review conveys that impression, although it seems to be a good review otherwise.
What sort of budget do you have for this machine? I think the Gateway was very expensive and the Dell isn't exactly cheap either.

I think the price is less important than finding a desktop replacement in a laptop. That means, among other things, a real numeric keypad. One of Lenovo's IdeaPads has such a configuration, but here on this forum there seems to be a huge amount of animosity against the ThinkPad maker.fuscob wrote:What sort of budget do you have for this machine? Re: Where's the big screen?
I would give a vote to the dell precision. I have had it for two years, and have really liked it. The WUXGA screen is very nice, minimal light bleeding, and very good contrast ratios. Only IPS screens are better.JimL wrote:Is there a recommendable laptop our there with a 17 inch screen? People don't seem to think much of the Ideapads.

Its also very well built, metal alloy chassis, and looks classy.
The dell E1720 also has a metal alloy chassis, but I believe its outer components look a tad bit cheap. The precison has a metal lid covering. After two years of 24/7 use (albeit on my desk), there is no paint fading anywhere, and things ae still rock solid.
Also, with precision, you get business support from dell, not their infamous consumer support.

I put out feelers about the Lenovo brand over a long period and got little, if any, response. I dropped it for some time. Then I heard about the Y710 (I believe it was) and I posted a query in the IdeaPad category and got no response of any kind over a period of weeks.ajkula66 wrote:JimL wrote:

Looking for SOME kind of reply I posted a very noticable query about it in a general category. I got some very angry replies saying Lenovo questions were out of order and I should go somewhere else.
I've been on this forum off and on for years and have previously found it to be very helpful and cordial. It strikes me that a question about a sister to the ThinkPads should be welcome. I am not trolling. I am saying there there seems to be a great deal of animosity toward the Lenovo brand here. Perhaps it is abject apathy instead of antipathy. I don't know.
Gentlemen, this thread is about recommendations for 17" wide screen laptops. Lets keep on topic. Ok, the ideapad Y710 is one such recommendation...next?
If this thread turns into a discussion about how the ideapad is or is not viewed on this forum, I will lock this thread. I posted a long explanation in the last thread on this topic, and I will not repeat it.
