Network share disconnects

#1 Post by jdhurst » Sat May 10, 2008 2:23 pm

It is simple to connect my laptop to my desktop in order to share and to synchronize business documents. With my XP laptop, the connection and the shared folder on the desktop lasts forever. No loss of shared folder.

When I connect my Vista laptop, the connection works, it picks up the relevant folder share on the desktop and synchronization works.

Alas, the shared folder disconnects after about 15 minutes of non-use and I can no longer synchronize. I have to log off and start back up again.

Is there any way to make a folder shared on a Vista machine permanent?

I use Tools -> Map Network drive in Windows Explorer or NET USE as a script in a batch command. Very, very common method to connect to a share on another folder. I just grab the whole drive (C$) on my desktop and pickup whatever folder I want. I do not use Microsoft's idea of public folders.

Did you set a maximum number of concurrent users?
In those 15 minutes, did you access the shared drive on the host itself?

Thanks.
I am the only user and the number of concurrent users is greater than 1. I did not access the host folders in that time. ... JDH

Thank you. There is a lot of information there, although I still haven't found anything about shares disconnecting. This problem affected some XP users as well, but not me, so I have never dug into it. ... JDH

And the answer is:

NET CONFIG SERVER /autodisconnect:-1

But it only lasts one logon. True, I can put it in the batch file that I use to connect the shares (and have done so), but there has to be a better way.

Microsoft (*very* high level person) confirmed that they put UAC in place to annoy users. More and more, I get convinced that Vista was deliberately designed not to work properly out of the box. Why? Only the doofuses at Microsoft know, but it ihas never taken me as long to tame ANY operating system as this one.

I don't even use Linux, but I tamed it in half the time of Vista.
