How much are my X31 and X40 worth? (Possible FS)

#1 Post by Sine » Sun May 11, 2008 2:54 pm

Well, after some careful deliberation between the X31 and X40, I found myself with...BOTH! I guess I could ask for a worse situation, but I'm still pretty torn about which one to choose. The X31 feels great in my hands and is really speedy, but the X40 is so slim and light, with a really great battery life. Do I go with the X31 or the X40, or do I sell both to get an X60?

Anyway, either of these are potential candidates to find a new home on the Marketplace section of this site. I don't really know what they're worth, so I wanted to see if anyone else had any idea.

X31:
-1.6 Ghz Pentium M
-40 GB HD
-1.25 GB RAM
-Ultrabase with CD-RW/DVD combo
-XP Pro COA
-AC adapter and battery

This one's in great shape, except for some light marks on the lid and a chip off the bottom where the laptop connects to the dock. It still latches on fine, but I guess the previous owner was a little hasty in removing it. Also, a screw is missing from the HD bay but it stays in just fine by itself. The battery holds about 3-3.5 hours.

X40:
-1.2 Ghz Pentium M
-40 GB HD
-1.5 GB RAM
-XP Pro COA
-Ultrabase with CD-RW/DVD Combo
-AC adapter and extended 8-cell battery

This machine has been around the block. There's some wear on the rubbery material on the sides, and some of the keys are completely smooth. The right-click takes a bit more force than usual. Overall, it's in good shape and the marks I mentioned aren't really visible unless you look at it closely. The battery holds about 5 hours.

Any input would be appreciated. :D

well, what are your usage patterns? From my perspective, I would choose the X40 because of the battery life and size but i would definitely buy a new keyboard (trackpoint buttons included). Many people appreciate x31, though, because of easy hdd update to some newer fast 2.5" model. But I wouldn't change from my x41t with it's perfect screen and perfect condition (despite the lame 1h battery life... need new one :) ).

I'm not sure on the X31 but I've seen the X41T selling on craigslist for around 400-500 dollars with the docking station but the same thing on Eb*y for about $500-650. It depends really on how much effort you want to put into selling this.

You're looking from anywhere between $350 and $450 depending on who's buying.

Prices have gone down tremendously since May of 2007...

My opinion only.

Thanks, everyone for your advice! I might need to sleep on it a bit more, but it's good to have a ballpark price in mind.

ni5l: Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind if I decide to sell.

It's a tricky decision, I'll tell you that much. I was using the X31 today, and it really reminds me of what a 12" T-series would be like. Kind of along the lines of the old 12" G4 Powerbooks that everyone loved. All the power you want in a small package. I have to say, though, that I really only use my laptop for office stuff and web surfing. I like power, but I also value battery life. Weight isn't so much of an issue for me, as long as the footprint's small enough. Still, I think I'll get my X40 a new keyboard and see how it feels.

The X40 wins the sexiness contest by a mile, it must be said. :)

You obviously like them both, so just keep them. It's not a crime to own more than one Thinkpad. I own 4 presently, and that is on the light side for me. Many others here own a lot more than that. It's ok, we understand :).

You might want to read this comparison between an X32, an X41, a T43, and an R52. The X32 gets the best words.

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2438

From what you've posted, I'd choose your X32 (more powerful, discrete graphics-more powerful) over the X40 (sleeker, but umm, maybe its better to save up for an X60).

I have a T43 and an R51e, both great machines, and I'm currently looking for an X32 (I'm out in Asia, so using the marketplace is an exercise in frustration.).
