I am looking for a new system board...
Well, I tried to fix my board by baking it in a toaster oven...even had a more accurate thermometer. I toasted it, literally! No power after I got everything assembled...so I am now looking for a new board for my T40!
Is there anything special I should look for? My board has 2G of RAM with the ATI 7500 video...I can't tell what the FRU is, though...that sticker burned off...

You may want to post a WTB ad in the Marketplace section of the forum...any T40/41/42 board should work for you.

One problem to consider is, if your ram is pc2100 and you get a T41 or T42 board, you will have to sell off your ram and rebuy pc2700. This restricts your replacement to a T40 board unless you want to deal with the ram issue.
Of course its possible your ram is already pc2700 since you have 2 1gb sodimm's which run in the T40 at the slower speed.
Just something to consider...

Generally, DDR RAM can be mixed in terms of speeds, and the slower of either the RAM or the motherboard will dictate the speed it will run at. Are T4xs an exception?Brad wrote:I think zdriver is not stating that PC2700 will not work in a T40 board but that PC2100 will not work in a T41 or T42.

Hi,
I swapped the board of my T40 for a T42 board last september. It is running flawlessly since with the old PC2100 RAM. It runs at PC2100 speed, but no noticeable difference in real life as others have stated... so changing the RAM is not required in this upgrade.

PC3200 ram is rated at 400mhz so I would think it would run in a 333Mhz T42/41 board. The ram simply runs at the slower bus speed. (the op would need his ram to run faster not slower if he upgrades to the faster motherboards)
Out of interest, I put a known good PC2100 256MB sodimm in one of my T41's as the only ram installed - got the 4 beep code - would not run.
Although I don't doubt the people who have had success running PC2100 at the faster clock speed, all ram is not created equal.
Also sometimes distributors relabel ram, I have a Kingston PC2700 sodimm that is actually shows as crucial in cpuz.
