What upgrades to put in a T43?

#1 Post by iThinkiAmBen » Mon May 12, 2008 4:01 pm

NorrisCell's T43 is on its way and I wanna keep it for at least 3 months. (That seems really easy, yes, but my record is six weeks.) What upgrades should I do? I'm on a budget of about $250. Here are the specs at this point.

- 2GHz Dothan, 533MHz FSB
- 1.5GB RAM
- 40GB 5400RPM HDD
- I think a DVD burner
- 6 cell battery, holds for about 3 hours
- 64MB Radeon X300

Thoughts?

Why not simply try use it first, and then see if any upgrade is necessary?? If you just have too much money, then why not donate some for charity... :?:

If, however, you insist on updating "something", you may perhaps find inspiration in the thread T42 Upgrade Possibilities. Note that HDD's for T43's are limited to certain models/types (unless willing to accept the "2010" boot message) - see the sticky at the top of the T4x forum about HDD's for T43's.

Maybe another 1/2 gig ram and maybe a 7200 rpm HD :D , but it kind of sounds like the machine should be pretty fast if your going to run XP. And it probably won't do to bad with Vista.

Yeah, it arrived like a half an hour ago and I just booted it up. It's going to take me a while to get used to the form factor, anyway... :D

I don't know why I want to upgrade it so much. I used to keep desktops for a while because I actually tinkered with them and upgraded them, which I usually don't do with a laptop, hence the upgrade itch.

A 7200RPM disk would probably be the first thing for me, and then probably another 512MB of RAM, to make it an even 2 gigs.

I have a Dell E248WFP (24" 1920x1200) that I can use with it, can the X300 handle it at all?

Thanks a lot for your opinions, guys.

The only thing that can make a difference that you'll ever get to notice running XP on that machine will be a faster HDD.

If you're going to be playing with Vista, you may want to upgrade RAM, but I wouldn't be doing that in the first place.

Just my $.02...

For a detailed answer, see the thread: Problems with non-thinkpad option drives on T43 thinkpads.
