RAS error 31, Ultimate 64, tethering to AT&T cell modem

#1 Post by jgrobertson » Tue May 13, 2008 11:02 am

Running Vista Ultimate 64 on a T60P with Core2Duo and built in Verizon EV-DO card.

I have disabled the Verizon EV-DO card in the BIOS.

I have four machines, two Vista 64 on Vista 32 and one XP. On three, I can connect to my AT&T Cell phone for 3G modem internet access. On the fourth, a Thinkpad T60P, with Ultimate 64, I get the error message:

Error 31: A device attached to the system is not functioning

Thinkcentre Vista Ultimate 64: It works
Thinkpad T43P Vista business 32: It works
Thinkpad T21 XP: It works
Thinkpad T60P Vista Ultimate 64: It gives the message above.

I have checked, rechecked and checked some more the setup, configuration etc.

AT&T says I will have to reinstall the Vista Ultimate 64 on the T60P.
MS support is of no help at all, could not get it elevated.

Does anyone know of any solution to this?

After trying everything I could think of including registry cleaning, uninstalling things that seamed could interfere, putting in a call to MS and winding up with nothing useful, -

I did what AT&T told me which was to reinstall the Vista. I did a clean install and now with SP1 in and all the drivers from Lenovo including access connections, it is working fine. Even Access Connections, recognizes the tethered cell phone and manages that well.

Some things to note here:

(T60P, 2623 DDU - this the 1900X1200 flexview - and my upgraded CPU to T7600 Core 2 Duo)

This machine is about a year old and I put Vista 64 on it too early. It was very unstable initially. Also I was running it with the built in Verizon EV-DO card for internet access (that worked).

Since then MS put out over 100 patches and finally SP1. Also I use a lot of applications and much had been installed and uninstalled. I also canceled my Verizon account and disabled the EV-DO card in the BIOS. So, it was a mess and the poor management of the registry by MS exacerbated that.

All that said, I have not reinstalled any applications yet other than those from Lenovo so there is still opportunity for things to go bad.

If and when I need another computer, I will look real carefully at Apple because as you look at this from the satellite view, MS has lost their way and their products are not very good.
