Any Problems With WinXP SP3 On T2X TPs?

#1 Post by nikki605 » Tue May 13, 2008 2:53 pm

I'm looking at Service Pack 3 for WinXP on the MS Windows Update website and I was just wondering how many of you have installed it on a T2X TP and if you've experienced any problems with it? Mine is a T21.

I hate being on the "bleeding edge" of technology.

Thanks!

One bit of advice for those that are installing windows updates, and then using System Update (even though this was on a T42):

I was updating two T42 systems, when I installed SP3, and realized that the systems wouldn't allow me to install .Net Framework, which is required by System Update. I had to uninstall SP3, then install .Net Framework 3.0, THEN reinstall SP3....

Interesting. I have .NET Framework 1.1 and 2.0 (SP1) installed on my T21. If I remember correctly, System Update (which I have installed and do use even though the T21 is not on the "supported" list) requires .NET Framework 2.0 at a minimum.

First, I was not aware that there was a .NET Framework 3.0 available. This prompts another question(s) - I never understood if I needed both versions of .NET Framework installed, but I left both installed. Now, there is a 3rd version. If I install it (before XP SP3) do I need the earlier 2 versions? Do I even need the 2 versions I have now?

Thanks for raising this issue. You made me think about it. I even have both versions installed on my desktop. :?

I went straight for .Net framework 3.0, and it installed 2.0 automatically...I think. I know that it was there in the end, but I never specifically chose it...

I'm doing some reading. I found where it says that installing version 3.5 will also install version 2.0 SP1. So far I haven't read where installing version 3.0 does the same thing.

Egads! why won't they just install the entire .Net Library. I recently spent an hour researching just this same topic. I had version 3.0 and 2.0 and low and behold some windows component ( I believe it might have been SilverLight) required 1.1 :x

I am always amazed at just how redundant the Win OSes can be. This isn't necessarily a bad thing; just not as clear as one would like.

I certainly agree with the "not as clear" part. It appears that I will just have to install version 3.0 right next to its ancestors, version 2.0 SP1 and version 1.1, as you never know which version an application may need.

Well, its sorta related to my original question. :? Now I know to install .NET Framework version 3.0 before I install SP3 and yes, .NET Framework versions 1.1 and 2.0 need to stay installed. :o

Just this weekend, I reloaded a T23 with OEM IBM XP, (restore discs). About the second update was to SP3. After that, several updates from MS and some drivers would not D/L. Uninstalled SP3 and everything loaded as usual. I'll do SP3 last from now on.

Now that's kind of disturbing. An SP that causes problems installing subsequent updates of other software/drivers.

After installing SP2 on both my T21 and my desktop a long time ago, I never had to uninstall it to get other, seemingly unrelated, downloads to install?!?

Does that seem right? I may have to do some Googling.

I just found this on the MS TechNet Forum regarding SP3.

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/Sho ... &SiteID=17

Not good! Anyone else with these types of problems?

EDIT: I didn't read far enough the first time. It looks like there is a solution that worked for a lot of users - register Wups2.dll.

That solution seems to work on two machines of mine that I have tried it on. Windows update is running very slowly right now though. Probably a server problem. ... JDH

As of 9:56 EST the net is obscenely slow. I'm using a little program called PingPlotter and there are dropped packets EVERYWHERE.

I just looked at some of the ping and packet loss graphs on dslreports for the Verizon fiber group and some parts of the country are also seeing high latency and packet loss. In particular, a user from Ft Wayne, IN.

No problems on my T23. I already had .Net 1, 2 and 3 installed when SP3 came down from MS. Rebooted and all seems to be fine so far.

My T23

#17 Post by furiousmonkey » Thu May 15, 2008 8:22 pm

I have had no problem on my T23.

It was the first computer I tried it on, I dont play video games , but I do a lot of graphics, so I was a little leary, after the install went well, I installed it on all the computers at the office. I am the technician of a medical clinic, so the importance of these computers is critical.

I have had no problems.

Let me expand on my experience.

All the computers that "already" were fully updated with all the XP updates, updated to SP3 just fine. It was only when I did a clean install of the OEM discs, (which are very old XP), and then did SP3 first, some updates wouldn't work.

OK, thanks for the replies. This won't be a scratch load, my T21 already has SP2 and all current critical updates. I'll probably just install .NET Framework 3.0 first and then SP3. After that I'll register Wups2.dll and see where I stand.

I'll be traveling for a couple weeks (with my T21) so I probably won't start this until I get back the end of the month. I don't want to start now and risk being stuck on the road with a messed up TP.

SP3 in T23

#20 Post by PopGoesWeasel » Tue May 20, 2008 8:09 pm

I originally installed SP3 beta on a unit with all MS Security updates. I had all the Dot Net Frameworks and patches installed prior to installing SP3.

When the final image was released, I then slipstreamed SP3 onto the OEM disk image and reinstalled. I had to then go back and reinstall IE7 and add some security updates. IE7 is only used for IE only web sites.

Interesting :thumbs-UP: where do I learn how to "slipstream" SP3 on to the OEM disk image?

EDIT: So I'm traveling, but went ahead and installed .NET Framework 3.0 in preparation for installing SP3. Now I have:

.NET Framework 1.1 w/Hotfix KB928366
.NET Framework 2.0 w/SP1
.NET Framework 3.0 w/SP1

WinXP SP3 Downloaded & Installed

#22 Post by nikki605 » Fri May 30, 2008 8:28 pm

I just installed SP3. After the download portion completed, it took about 40 minutes to do the install and reboot the T21. There were no errors or problems.

To be safe, I registered Wups2.dll from the command prompt:

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Now I'll just see how the TP runs in the coming days and weeks.

So I found this great site with instructions for how to slipstream SP3 into my WinXP install CD using nLite.

http://www.lancelhoff.com/2008/03/12/ho ... indows-xp/

Worked great, created an iso image and burned it to a CD. Put it in the CD drive long enough to see the MS Welcome screen and then exited.

My question is this: The WinXP (SP1) disc I started with is an UPGRADE CD. It says right on it - "This program will search your system to confirm your eligibility for this upgrade edition." Does this mean that I still have an upgrade version, just with SP3? Does it mean that I wouldn't be able to install it on a new formatted HDD because there would be no OS on it at all?

I haven't scratch loaded Win XP in so long I don't remember most of the process.

Thanks!
