WMA License Troubles

#1 Post by AlphaKilo470 » Sun Dec 12, 2004 10:51 pm

Earlier today, I downloaded two songs from an online music store, so I own rights to listen to the songs, but they only work on my desktop. I try copying the files to my laptop so I can listen to the songs elsewhere and they don't play on my laptop, I get a license error. Is there a way to either transfer or override this license check so I can play the music I paid for?

I've had that happen as well sometimes however it will work and transfer the license. But if it's not then you can always burn the tracks to a CD then copy them to the notebook.

Just record them into mp3's on your desktop, and you can copy that file as many times as you want.

A good program for recording WAV-out from whatever is playing at the moment (indedpendent of software) is WavePad, its totally free I believe so check it out. I can explain in greater detail how to go about 'ripping' the WMA to a generic MP3 with WavePad if you wish, let me know!

Thanks for the tip. You know, when I download illegal MP3's, they always work, but when I download from a pay service, there is all this Digital Rights crap (thanks to Clinton, the RIAA and their precious DMCA, aka the [censored] and crap coming out of it), and yet, the suits wonder why Kazaa is still so popular among people who say they'd pay if it was cheaper or something like that. Well, anyways, sorry for making a political gesture, just wanted to get it off my head, thanks for the tip, I'll see if that software you mentioned works whan I get home tonight.

Well, I fixed the trouble with the wma's. Just used Wavepad on the ThinkPad and hooked my desktops speaker output to my ThinkPads microphone input and recorded a new file.

AlphaKilo, you got it. Although I have very few downloaded music (I mostly buy CDs), I rip my CDs. Now if a bought MP3 song becomes such a hassle due to DRM, they almost make people act illegally! One day they might find out that repression just doesn't work...

The cost of all the lawyers, court dates, negative advertising, security measuers and donations to politicians, I wonder if it was worth it, are these costs really outweighed by the losses from MP3's in the past?

Well, the Majors keep complaining while making more and more profits each year. Paradox, isn't it?

I don't know if the record companies are just being silly, or if they are penny pinchers, maybe they just have nothing better to do.
