Anyone have experience with AVG Free 8.0?

#1 Post by leoblob » Fri May 16, 2008 11:30 am

Looks like support for AVG Free 7.5 will stop the end of this month. Does anyone have any experience or opinions about AVG Free 8.0?

Thanks

i tried it for a little bit but i didn't like pop ups for some reason. also AVG never blocked any virus/worm/trojan whatsoever. i've tried avira antivir and on the first day it blocked started blocking infections.

It appears they have partnered with Yahoo to provide some sort of "ratings" notification of potentially bad sites. I have not figured out how to opt out of that, but since it does not slow things down, I am going to run with AVG 8 as it.

Other than that, AVG seems like the same basic product. AVG has caught three or four possible virii over the past two years.

I also run three of the paid versions on three other machines with no problems.

Has been using AVG Free including 8.0 (not on my own box through) for years, so far so good...

I've tried it, and went back to 7.5 wich is faster and has no annoying pop-us.... I had no problems with blocking virus/worm/trojan :? .... Is it true that support ends soon?

EDIT: Free vesrion doesn't detect rootkits and Email scanner is only available for 30 days....

the popups can be disabled, as can the "bad site ratings" feature -- at least on the paid version.   i currently use AVG8 network edition and have been using AVG since the mid-90s.

I'm using NOD32, simple, little resources, runs in the background, works great for me.

Although I used to use AVG when I first got my laptop, never had a problem with it either.
I am also using Spybot searchNdestroy for spyware just to catch whatever

AVG Free 8 is out? I'll stick to AVG Free 7.5

Actually, I'd rather not have to use an antivirus program at all.

If you never go online, you won't need such a program.
Otherwise it's madness trying to surf without any AV protection.

AVG 8 picked up a few things that 7.5 did not pick up on my machines. I was surprised at that one.

The only thing I have noticed with it is the rating think makes google load a wee bit slower.
