Final Thoughts before taking the Plunge

#1 Post by fkelly » Sat May 17, 2008 12:32 pm

Ok, I am getting ready to take the plunge to pick up an X6 and would be interested in hearing from you guys already using an X61 or X61(s).
I have been using a T40,T42 and X31 and am wondering what can I expect moving up to an X6 series.
Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

Small is GOOD

Having taken my trusty T42 all over the world, I went looking for something smaller and lighter. Briefly tried the Asus EEE 2lb wonder. But the small screen and keyboard just took too much effort to get used to...doable but not worth the time. Then I got a great deal for another beautiful Thinkpad: X61. The s just wasn't worth the extra $$ to me. I have travelled a couple of times now with the X61 4 cell battery. Watched a couple of moives on the plane from the SD card slot. Done the usual surfing, Office work, and other standard tasks. I LOVE the X61. Its 3lb weight 10.5in x 8.5in x 1.5in size and luxurious keyboard is just about optimum for travel. I love the 4x3 screen which shows more web page than WS. My T42 now stays home.

Out of all the ThinkPads that have gone through this house, X61s had the best battery life by far. I also liked the screen as much as I can possibly like any TN panel. Anything that I didn't like had to do with the Vista, and not the machine itself.

If I could justify having one, I would get it in a split second, especially at today's prices.

Well George finally took the plunge...Picked up an X60 and almost finished loading up things.
I read a post by someone that kinda sums this puppy nicely,,
"it just works"....effortlessly.

I was going to get a 7200rpm drive but gawd I think this 5400 is going to do the ticket. I may drop in one more gig of mems, but this puppy absolutely smokes.

Oh and it is so nice to drop $25 bucks on a gig of memory then the $1000 for the ole pc2700......

((((calma, just joshing with the $1000, I meant $999.))))

Ok, let me go play some more.

Well I'll tell you my succession of Thinkpad laptops over the years...

T40p --> T60 --> T43p --> X41 --> X60 Tablet

Out of all the units I have used, my two faves are def my original T40p and now my X60 tablet.

I think the T40p was lighter than my X60 tablet I have now, but in computing power that it did not have, the X60t cant be matched.

Of course using a tablet is slightly off course from what you are interested in, but similar. I get about 5 hrs of battery life on full charge and this lasts me long enough for school and such.

I think the keyboard on the X60 is the best I've used yet, with the T60 keuyboard being only fair. I wont say it was bad as all Thinkpad keyboards knock the competition out of the water but the T6x series is just too stiff for my life. Anyone agree?

And I think the X61 keyboards are stiffer than that of the step back, X60 series. At least from friends' laptops compared to mine.

But overall, the X series is a godsend for those who have primary computers with the speed and gigapower that their laptops dont need.

Am I happy as an X6x user? Definitely. Id love to put my hands on an X300 as I do miss my optical drive and touchpad, but am used to the changes now. The Ultranav nubstick navigation on the X series is a change but actually works faster and requires less movement to get the mouse across the screen.

Also, my ultrabase dock for the X60t provides me with optical for those few days every few months when it is needed.

Thanks for the review... i have the same history too, going from the T20 > z61m > T42 > x41 > just bought the x60t on lenovo clearance sight for 930 + 110 for the ultrabase, i am exciting. However, I am hearing that performance wise, the x61t is better.. thought anyone?
