what are the benfits to registering the thinkpad w/lenovo

Is it necessary for warranty or what?

I've never registered one. The warranty belongs to the system, not you.

Well, way back when IBM was selling Thinkpads, I bought a 6 month old unit in Canada and registered it before moving overseas. They confirmed my international warranty, sent warranty stickers with the expiry date, and even gave me an extra year of cover.

Now that would make registering worthwhile if Lenovo was as accommodating :)
