Fresh XP on X31, I can't install anything!

#1 Post by Sine » Sun May 18, 2008 2:58 pm

I've installed Windows so many times, I could do it in my sleep. This time, though, something's definitely wrong!

Basically, I can't install anything. I've installed a number of different drivers as well as Access IBM, and nothing shows up. There's nothing for Access IBM in the start menu, my audio still doesn't work, nor does my ethernet. When I go to the appropriate places in Control Panel, it says there's no hardware present for audio or ethernet.

Any suggestions for this weird problem would be greatly appreciated. :D

BTW, the guy I bought it from didn't include the recovery CDs, and everything I've tried to install has been from the Lenovo website.

Are you using the latest SystemUpdate?
The older SoftwareUpdate is no longer supported.

I would look in device manager for any yellow exclamation points. These would indicate hardware that is not installed with the proper drivers.

Sine:

If I'm wrong with this suggestion then please don't be insulted.

If you are downloading driver packages from the Lenovo web site, double-clicking on the downloaded file does not install anything; it merely unzips the file and puts the uncompressed files into a folder at C:\Drivers (usually). You then have to hunt for the driver's file and double-click on its .exe file to start the driver installer.

If you already knew this then sorry.

Brad: Yep, I've looked there and it's full of yellow exclamation points. Nothing's been installed

k0ko: Don't worry, I'm not offended, and thanks for the suggestion! The installer did run and complete. I've restarted it several times, too.
