Recovery removed from machine error

#1 Post by Scoot » Mon May 19, 2008 7:05 am

Hello. I had my hard drive fail on a T40 and it is under extended warranty so IBM sent me a new drive and the restore discs. I disc to start restore process and 7 more to follow. I decided to go with more than the 40 G and put in a Seagate 80 G. When I put the first disc in it goes through the motions and when I click restore to factory it tells me the feature has been removed from machine. I have read and tried the other posts here about the predesktop bios enable/disable with same results. Anyone have another idea?
IBM won't deal with it because of aftermarket drive. Thanks.

Is your CD set as first boot device? If not, try that. If I recall correctly, the T40 had only 4 disks in the recovery set. Are you sure you have the right ones? You may also want to try re-setting the master boot record on the new hard disk.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the CD is set as the master boot and it does boot from the CD and loads the recovery process. The discs say they are for ThinkPad R51, T42, T42p but the tech at IBM said it would be the same, it does list the type 2373 which mine is. I have read other posts where switching machine types worked anyway but maybe there is a trick to it. Call IBM again? I did try it just a minute ago with the HD they sent me with the same result.
Thanks again.

Yes, the T42 disks should work fine. I think it's time to call IBM again!

Go to the BIOS/security. Set "predesktop area" to normal
