how to disable soundmax audio on t42

#1 Post by k3nnis » Mon Dec 13, 2004 8:11 pm

Hi there.

I was wondering how do i disable th eonboard soundmax card on my t42? Do i do it in the bios? The reason i am asking is because i got a external m-audio transit usb soundcard for my t42.

Cheers.

I am not really so certain you want to disable the built-in soundcard. A better alternative would be to go into:
Control Panel-->Sounds and Audio Devices
and then go to the Audio tab and set the default device for sound playback to your USB Transit.

BTW, Good choice on the M-Audio Transit. A nice card.

Hi lfeagan.

Thanks, yeah the control panel way works fine:) By the way is there a reason why to disable the soundmax via bios is not a good idea? Just curious.

By the way do you have the transit?:) I wonder how many people on this forum has it , just want to see what people think of it.

Cheers.

Nope, don't have a Transit but I looked seriously at getting one and know some fellas who do have it. I have an M-Audio Firewire Audiophile. Love it! :) Have it hooked into my PPA headphone amp and Grado RS-1 cans. 8)

The Transit should be a nice unit. The alternative that many people also look at are the HeadRoom BitHead or Total BitHead. They are also nice units.

Hi.

I see:) You sure have some nice cans there. I have senn hd-580 but i hardly use it, as i run speakers. By the way how does the firewire audiophile compare to the transit in terms of sound quality?

I am running ASIO with winamp 5 and mad plugin. I have one problem, when playing back mp3s there is no problems, but when i try to stream shoutcast radio stations, every 5 or so seconds there is like a sound glitch, like cuts out and comes back in a split second. I tried it on my desktop PC which has a m-audio revo 7.1 soundcard and no problems. Any ideas whats going on here?:)

Cheers.

Well, I think it could be one of two things. First, the radio station is going in an out, causing some dropouts. Second, it could be the USB connection speed. If I am not mistaken, the Transit uses USB 1.1. This speed might be too slow for streaming off the internet. This is the one downfall is USB 1.1 audio connections...dropouts. You can check by unplugging the Transit, and playing the radio station through the internal soundcard. If there are dropouts, then the station is messed up. If it plays fine off the internal soundcard, but not so good off the Transit, then my guess is that the USB 1.1 connection is too slow for internet radio streaming. It could be something entirely different too, but this is what comes to mind now.

Hope this helps a bit,

Brian

Hi Atmosman.

Thanks for the info:) Appreciate it. Yeah it could be possibly be the USB 1.1 speed, but i thought it should be more than enough to stream radio stations. Anyways i tested using my desktop PC internal soundcard and no problems. No dropouts at all. So radio station is fine. Its either the usb or something different :( I tried the t42 builtin soundmax soundcard and it still does the glitch, weird.....

edit: i am still running the soundmax(built-in into t42) now as we speak and it seems ok now. inconsistent. But with the transit the problem is more obvious if i can put it that way....

Are you on a wired connection to the internet, or are you on a wireless one? If you are on a wireless connection, that could be the reason for the dropouts on your laptop but not your desktop: low transfer speeds.

Firewire rox! I hate to bum on your parade, but it does perform quite a bit better than the Transit, esp if you want to do some high quality recording and playback. The Transit does have bandwidth limitations. Thus why I got a Firewire card. The Audiophile USB also has bandwidth limitations which cut down on its abilities to do high bandwidth audio recordings.

I'd have to agree with lfeagan. It seems like the built in soundcard on the T40 is just enough to get some sound from the radio station. Using the transit will make it worse since the communication speed is slower.

If you are really bummed out and think you need a new card then read on, otherwise, have a nice day. :)

Firewire does have the best transfer rate, but the sound cards are generally much bigger than USB cards, more expensive, and you need a PCMCIA firewire adapter to have it work with your Thinkpad. M-Audio has some of the best firewire soundcards out there. If you want to stick to USB, there is one USB 2.0 soundcard I know of: The Creative SoundBlaster Audigy2 NX. It's a bit bigger than the Transit, but it has a remote control. You could also look at a PCMCIA soundcard. The two I would look at are the Echo Indigo I/O (they discontinued the playback card) and the Creative SoundBlaster Augigy2 ZS.

I've had problems with picking sound devices the way that was mentioned--sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it half does, on my computer. The quick way to dig deeper to shut down SoundMax is to go to the device manager (right click "My Computer"/properties/hardware). In the device manager, go to sound controllers/SoundMax, and disable the driver. After you're done you can go back and enable it.

Hi there.

You mean after you disabled the soundmax that method, your external soundcard always works now? Whereas before only sometimes it works.

Cheers.
