Are you asking the bulb length or with the connectors? I trim the metal connectors down to about 2 mm. The bulb is just slightly longer than the size of the glass. It is really almost the same size. There are silicon boots that slide over where the wire is soldered onto the connection. At that point the exposed bulb should be the same size as the glass.

290mm length/1.8mm diameter should work
according to information from the expert of the german thinkpad forum:

though the thread is about sxga+ displays
length will be the same, diameter could be 2mm maximun
which wouldnot make much difference

good luck!

Diameter MUST be 1.8mm, otherwise you will have problems with the light diffusor because the metal fins are bent slightly outwards. I had this problem.

In addition be careful about the CCFL, you might be disappointed if it does not work nice with your inverter. I have figured out that Sanken Industries has the very best CCFLs. as far as I know they are a main supplier to Samsung and Sharp. I had experiences with a "noname" CCFL which worked fine, but needs at least 2 minutes to heat up and the end result is much darker than the original CCFL, because the characteristics did not fit with the inverter nicely. I assume this is the main cause that folks sometimes complain about dark displays while others with exactly the same Thinkpad model could not be happier with their bright display.
