Windows 2008 server on X61

#1 Post by adrianaitken » Wed May 21, 2008 3:06 pm

So, installed the 60 day demo from Microsoft.
All the bits and pieces seem to work.
However I seem to have 2 issues and hope that someone out there has 'been there, done that and got the tee-shirt' !!!

1. WLAN doesn't show up on the status bar on the hinge. The Bluetooth and WWAN do though !!! Any idea how to get the WLAN lit up ?

2. I used to use the 3G watcher from Sierra Networks to control my WWAN card under XP i.e. switch to voice etc. Now when I enable the card I get a connection to the internet so the card/drivers work. But when I install the 3G watcher software, it gets to the end and then says 1722 Error, some part of the installer is corrupt (or words to that effect). Downloaded the software again but get the same results. Has anyone got the 3G watcher software to install and run under Windows 2008 server ?

apart from those issues, 4 Gig Ram available and a nice quiet responsive SSD !!!!

which wifi card do you have and what driver are you using?   the intel AGN in my X300 and intel ABG in my X61 both light the status indicator under 2008 enterprise using lenovo drivers.

Which SSD do you have? And how fast is it compared to your old hdd? More importantly, how much did it cost you?

Just curious for my own purposes.

Erik - it's an Atheros abgn. It works fine, just doesn't show up as being 'live'

Minc3d - $450 from a US eBayer. It's a Sandisk 32Gig. 65 Meg/s read, 55 Meg/s write (alledgedly). Compared to my 35Meg/s standard one (5400 rpm , 60 Gig size). It is VERY quite as well !!!! And I also have a Ramdisk as well (512Meg) - useful for the TEMP directory and Temp Internet Files. Google for 'gavotte ramdisk' - it's free and works with 2000,xp,Vista and 2008 server.

ahh, that makes sense.   for whatever reason, atheros cards don't play well with 2003 and 2008.   at least it works though -- that's more luck than i had with an atheros a/b/g mPCI-e card in my former T61p under 2003.

Hi,

First install drivers , I believe that W2K8 didn't install drivers for your Atheros, then add Wireless LAN Services in your W2K8 server management. That should help.

I don't think this card plays well with Vista 64-bit either. Mine doesn't at any rate. ... JDH

@masterus - yep, did that. The Wifi works, it's the WWAN I had issues with (voice not data)

@others - I had pre-downloaded the latest Vista drivers from IBM/Lenovo's website and just installed them as normal. Worked fine first time.

Anyway, reverted back to XP since the benefits of 2K8 server was I get 4 Gig of RAM. And that was it. Not enough to give up XP just yet.

I'm not seeing the WLAN status light with 64bit Vista Basic on my X61s. Still not used to NOT seeing the status light on the hinge... I tend to reach for the hardware wireless switch on the front pretty often.
