Recovery Questions

#1 Post by jbrasher » Fri May 23, 2008 9:50 pm

Well, I'm going to bedoing a RR to my Z61m using the recovery partition.

This should leave me with the factory install from July of 2006.

Once that's done about how long will it take for me to get things current?

Could I just apply SP3 at that point?

Any other options?

Thanks.
John

My standard operating procedure;

-Restore to factory defaults
-Delete all unwanted IBM/Lenovo software (like Access Connections, Message Center, Symantec Antivirus, old versions of IBM's software installer, etc.)
-Apply all Microsoft updates, SP3 should be a nice shortcut instead of downloading and installing 100+ updates, keep checking to ensure all critical updates have been installed (0 available).
-Install most recent version of Lenovo System Update software --> http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... E.html#DLP
-Check Microsoft updates for any remaining optional updates, and apply as you like
-Install antivirus software and away you go.

I like to make the recovery discs and make a copy of the IBMTools folder. It contains all the apps and drivers installed on the machine. Then I wipe the drive and do a clean install. I only use a few of the ThinkVantage and apps anyway.

Then I use DiscWizard to make an image of the drive which I can put back in like five minutes should it become necessary. DiscWizard is essentially Acronis True Image. It's a free download form Seagate's website if you have a Seagate drive.

Other than the latest service pack, I'm not much of an updater. I usually only update when I have a problem that needs fixing. If it ain't broke why fix it? The few ThinkVantage Tools I'm using right now came with my R60 two years ago.
