T42-no standby after replacing fan

#1 Post by agm » Sat May 24, 2008 11:29 am

Hi all,

Great website and I enjoy the wealth of information on it! After searching for a while, I couldn't find a post similar to my current problem.

I had the "fan error" problem about 2 or 3 weeks ago in my T42. I got the fan, replaced the fan and the computer (in terms of running) functioned perfectly. I am a fairly energy conscious person, so I routinely shut down my computer when I went away from it for long periods of time. I never really used the "standby", but recently, I wanted to transport my computer to a coffee house and noticed that the computer will not go into standby. I was wondering if anyone had a diagram of the "standby" functioning

When I took the T42 apart again, to me, it looks like the only thing required to activate "stand by" is a metal on metal contact between the keyboard button and the part on the motherboard. However, when I tested this, it does not work. Am I missing something?

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Are you talking about when you close the lid? The lump on the screen bezel presses against a button on the keyboard bezel which pushes a button on the LCD cable.

Yes, exactly. The lump on the LCD that depresses into the keyboard. After putting the entire keyboard (with surrounding plastic including the touch pad) back onto the computer, it is not going into standby.

Thanks!

Fn+F4 will put it in standby as well....
Holding down just Fn for a few seconds resumes.
Otherwise, remove the keyboard, palmrest & bezel and check the switch on the lcd cable for proper operation.

Look at the event log and see if there is a message.

If it is not going into standby, it can have two issues:

a) the hardware button not working

b) Windows refusing to enter standby

To check out what it is, use Start | Shutdown... and then select standby.

It is definitely hardware related. I was able to confirm that using the Fn F4 puts the machine into standby. Exactly what "switch" am I looking for on the LCD cable? To me, when I look at the set up, it looks like there is a the plastic "point" on the LCD which depresses into another plastic part on the "palm rest" which triggers a metal plate touching another metal object on the motherboard. This causes the machine to go into standby...correct?

Anyways, all the information has been extremely useful so far and I appreciate your responses.

Hi, just a guess but have you verified that the specified action for
"when I close the lid.." under Control panel->Power options->advanced tab is set to suspend ?
760CD -> 770X -> 600E -> T23 -> T40 -> T42 -> T400 -> T430

You mean the switch is to the top left of your Access IBM button? Yes that is the mechanic used by that button.

The switch is on the actual LCD cable to the left of the part number label. It is a small black button in the middle of a square silver metal thing. (square silver metal thing is a technical term)

Also, have you checked the power settings to make certain that closing the lid is set to make it standby?

I appreciate the advise. The problem is definitely mechanical and I think that I am missing a part... Looking at the "silver thingie" I do not see a button coming out of it. All I see is a metal tab that touches the metal part. However, there is nothing that comes "out" of the "silver thingie". It is just metal... Am I missing a part do you think? I can use the Fn-F4 currently, but I want to fix the computer at some point.

Thanks!

The switch is broken.
You will need to replace the lcd cable assembly (which includes the lid close switch)
Make sure you get the correct cable, xga vs sxga cable.
