Start Menu's "Internet" --> Access Denied...?

#1 Post by loyukfai » Sat May 24, 2008 12:57 pm

When I click Start Menu's "Internet" button to launch Internet Explorer, Windows say "Access Denied".

However, starting Internet Explorer in Program Group --> Internet Explorer is okay.

Also tried installing Firefox and configure it as the default browser, and it's also okay.

Any idea...? A solution will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't even have Internet Explorer on my start button, so maybe the shortcut for it has been corrupted. You can try replacing the icon with a known good one (although I don't use the XP interface, I use the classic interface). ... JDH

For the default "Internet" and "E-mail" shortcuts, AFAIK, they're controlled by the registry.

Found a fix by looking at the registry values put there by Firefox...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\IEXPLORE.EXE\shell\open\command]
@="%ProgramFiles%\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe,0"

--> Access denied

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\StartMenuInternet\IEXPLORE.EXE\shell\open\command]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe"

--> Works

Note: Above text is from the .reg files exported by Registry Editor.

I am pleased that you fixed it. But, while all this stuff is in the registry, there has never been a case that I had to use the registry to fix a shortcut. Somehow, it got corrupted. ... JDH

The default "Internet" and "E-mail" links in the Start Menu is a bit different - They're not the traditional Windows "shortcuts", but are some registry entries instead. (see above Microsoft KB article for more information)

Anyway, thanks and have a nice day!
