A30 repair story

#1 Post by SMA » Sun May 25, 2008 4:04 am

I obtained a defect A30 with these issues.
The picture on the lcd panel was distorted. On external monitor the display was readable.
There was a 'fan error' message.
The cmos battery was dead.
No hard drive and no dvd drive.

I started out by searching this forum and quickly found this.
So the first thing to do was to see if this was also my problem - and it was.
One of the long screws had been into the wrong hole and been down touching the collector pin of the fan-transistor on the motherboard.
The mechanical damage was limited to a small mark in the solder, but electrically the fan-transistor was dead. So the conclusion has to
be that the machine had been turned on with that screw down there.
I replaced the fan-transistor and that solved the fan error problem.
A big thank you to rkawakami for posting his findings.

Then I tried swapping lcd panels between the a30 and a t21. That moved the display error to the t21 and the a30 display was fine.
So I went to ebay for a new lcd panel, which I received. And it is working.

There is nothing worth telling about the remaining issues, but I have a working a30 now.
