X61 tablet quirks

#1 Post by aaron.pink » Mon May 26, 2008 10:14 am

Hey folks, I'm new to the community. Great site/resource!

I'm also new to the x61 tablet, though not new to tablets. I recently recieved my X61 and I've been having a few small problems that have actually been interfearing with my ability to use and enjoy my tablet.

As a student, I bought this with the main purpose of taking notes during classes, and cutting images in relevant sections from the web or class slides into one note.

My two problems are
1) - My pen is completely erratic. Sometimes I write, and it writes. Other times it doesn't. Some times it doesn't let me write certain shapes - like the letter D. It'll basically accept anything, but freeze every time I write that same shape.

2) The Window's snipping tool. I used to always use this and it was great. now it automatically jumps to the bottom of whatever web page, or pdf document I'm looking at. Which sucks when what I'm trying to cut/paste was at the top of the page, and is no longer in view.

------------
I know these are small bugs, but Im at a loss for tracking down the cause. I've uninstalled the tablet components of the Vista OS, and reinstalled them, as someone else suggested (somewhere else), and there has been no change.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

1-- Have you tried handwriting recognition and calibrating the screen with the pen.

2-- Sorry, rarely use windows snipping tool, and when I do, it doesn't give me any problems

quirks

I tried the calibration after the reinstallation of the tablet components.

Currently I have hand writing recognition on. I'm going to try shutting that off for a bit and seeing if there is a change in function.

Thanks for the suggestion!

With regards to the handwriting, I know I have been inking hardcore since November of last year and have yet to turn it on to recognize my writing...and I have yet to find any problems with recognition. My writing is pretty messy too, I found the features out of the box were fine.

Pen definitely having issues

#6 Post by aaron.pink » Thu Jun 12, 2008 8:44 am

Hey - Thanks for the tips above, but I am definitely having pen problems! It doesn't seem to matter what inking program I'm using. The pen is intermittantly cutting in and out while writing! I'm not sure if its the pen, or the computer at this point.

I think once I resolve this problem, I'll be fine.

Anyone else having Pen problems?

I have had some pen problems when chopping and changing between drivers, some of which were incompatible with the digitiser unit in the machine. (e.g. one thing that is virtually guaranteed to give you pen problems, is to install the Wacom enhanced drivers on a tablet equipped with a Multitouch digitiser)

The pens themselves are a fairly passive device, if you are able to get your hands on another Wacom-compatible pen then you could give it a shot. But since your machine is new and (presumably) under warranty, the easiest solution is to let Lenovo worry about it. :)

If it is an actual non-software fault, I'd say it's most likely to be due to the digitiser unit behind the screen not working properly -- or a poor cable connection to it.

Thanks Rek! I'm taking your advice and letting Lenovo deal with it. I'll let you know how my first support experience goes!

Update to my pen problems

#9 Post by aaron.pink » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:54 am

Hey again. I've been out of town for most of the summer, so I haven't had a chance to send my laptop away to be looked at, but I am still having problems while writing in tablet mode.

That being said, I think I know what is causing my problems and I thought I'd check to see if anyone has encountered this one.

Basically, when I'm in tablet mode, I noticed that my cursor will fly off in different directions if the screen is rotated even the tiniest amount. If all pressure is removed from the screen, it takes a second, but the cursor stabalizes and becomes responsive to my pen again.

Unfortunately, when I write on my tablet, my hand rests on the screen (just like I used to on my previous 2 tablets). This pressure seems enough to throw my cursor off just enough to interfere with my writing.

I have a feeling this is an overactive response to the screen moving. Is there a way to shut it off?

Any thoughts would be helpful! I won't be able to send my machine away for at least another few weeks, and even then, I don't really want to send it away unless i have to!

All the best!
Aaron
