Raging (Blue) Toothache!

#1 Post by Nick Y » Mon May 26, 2008 12:40 pm

I have just had to replace my old Bluetooth mouse with a new one; different model, but both made by Trust.

I had terrible troubles, initially, with Bluetooth, so I uninstalled completely and re-installed, following the instructions of 7jba10ww all the way.

I found that much of the installation ended up in Device Manager 'Other devices', with a message to say that the driver could not be installed. Properties showed an error code of 28. Hence I selected each one (Hands Free Audio (twice), LAN access, Stereo Audio) and updated the driver by pointing the driver search towards C:\Drivers\Win\TBTH\Win32\Drivers. This seems strange to have to do this.

I ran the 'Add a Bluetooth Device' and it found the old mouse, but then it wanted to install Bluetooth HID driver, for which I had to follow the procedure above again. Acquiring the new mouse again wanted the HID driver.

Problems:

a) When I reboot, or turn Bluetooth off and on via Fn+F5, I keep getting 'new hardware found' and I get two Unknown Devices and the Bluetooth Communications Port in Other Devices. The H/w wizard runs twice, displaying a mouse icon, and eventually I get a message saying that the h/w has been installed and is ready to use. A little later, the Bluetooth Communications Port goes from Other Devices. The Two Unknown Devices remain in Other Devices. BTW, when testing this, I uninstalled the two unknowns, in the Device Manager, and had both mice off. Turning the mice back on, one the above has completed, both still function.

b) For the two 'Unknown Devices' in 'Other Devices' both have the same location as one of two ‘Unknown Devices’ in the ‘Mice and Other Pointing Devices’ in the Device Manager. (By location I mean the entry in Properties: Device Type: ‘Other devices’, Manufacturer: ‘Unknown’, and Location ‘Location 268435456’.)

The new mouse has 6 buttons, rather than the 3 of the old mouse, which perhaps correlates with the two unknown devices.
Both mice work, although I only have one on at a time -so not a conflict there. I have re-installed with the latest Bluetooth driver about 10 times using an uninstaller that removes things from the registry. I also went through and removed every Bluetooth reference from the registry, to no avail. Finally I went back to 7jba08ww, but this made no difference so I am back with 7jba10ww.

I am using XP with sp2 on my T43.

Any suggestions, please?

BTW, a search for 'unknown device' came back saying that I could buy them on ebay!

Are you using the built in bluetooth that came from the factory in the T43 or was an after market card installed? It sounds like a driver problem, as in you are not using the right one.

Built in. I agree about driver problem, but then I have re-installed it quite a few times with one Lenovo one for the T43.

Follow the installation procedures here step by step. Tell us where it fails. Make sure to uninstall what you have first.

Thanks. The link is to version 7jba10ww, which I installed as per 7jba10ww.txt.

Where I would say if fell over is when I went to 'Start Using Bluetooth' via the system tray BT icon. I was surprised to find that the drivers were not installed properly and that I had to go to the Device Manager, to Other Devices, to complete the installation and point the re-install to the win32 drivers in C:\Drivers\TBTH

You should not have to do that. It's really tough to say where the problem might be. Registry problem maybe...I hardly ever recommend an XP reinstall to anyone, but ...

Harryc: Thanks for your help.

Seems to cure it (and it is forcing me to get rid of a lot of old rubbish at the same time.)
