Switch SATA to Compatibility Mode

#1 Post by Bob34 » Mon May 26, 2008 8:25 pm

How do I get Windows' to boot while in the SATA controller is in Compatibility mode? I did a repair install with Windows and now I'm in AHCI mode and I can't switch back. I know how to go from Compatibility mode (if Windows' is installed in that mode) to AHCI, but can't seem to go the other way.

AHCI mode seems to be a little buggy, I can't even grab SMART information on the drive in the main bay.

You set the compatibility mode in your BIOS.

Guess I should clarify.

I did a repair install with a Windows' disk that had the AHCI drivers integrated in them and the BIOS set to AHCI mode. I can't switch back to Compatibility mode (in the BIOS) without Windows' blue screening because the Storage Drivers aren't installed.

It was easy enough to go from Compatibility mode to AHCI (in the BIOS) after a Windows' installation by prepping Windows' with the AHCI driver, but I can't go the other way around now.

You mean you can't get into your BIOS?
Hold the F1 key down, then power on, it should bring you straight into BIOS.
If that does not work, hold down F2, then power on. You should get a 'Stuck Key' error, after which you can press F1 to go into BIOS.
I don't have a TP with SATA, so I can't help you any further.
Some other kind soul perhaps?

I can change it in the BIOS, just Windows' will BSOD at boot-up if its set to compatibility mode.

Carbon_unit do you mean this?

Oh, I've done that after the repair install. Worth another try though. Anything in particular I might want to try besides just installing it?

PS I can't boot into Safe Mode in Compatibility mode either, so that's out.

I don't know what is broken on your machine. I do know that i have switched my T60 and my R61 to compatibility mode with no problems at all.
Sorry I can't be more help.

Did you install Windows in AHCI mode?

Sounds like there may be a problem with that disk and the drivers. Like others I've installed and used windows in Compatibilty mode and since I don't do a lot of intensive stuff found compatibility mode to be perfectly acceptable. I've read in past post's in the t6x conf of some making comparisons between an install in ahci and compatibilty modes and there appears to be little real noticeable difference.

Well the Repair install blew out the drivers, like it should. LoL, unfortunately I integrated the AHCI driver, was in that mode when I ran the Repair install, and did F6... doh.

It's possible nLite f'd up the install disc.

Honestly, I think it might be partially the BIOS and Lenovo's issue with non-official firmware'd hard drives in their mainbay. The drive doesn't exhibit any issues in the Ultrabay. In the past 6 months, I've seen two boot errors (can't initialize disk, ie BIOS level not OS level). The disk does not exhibit any other issues, I've done full scans with Hitachi's DFS and chkdsk and not one bad sector or any other errors, no write errors within Windows, nothing. I just think the AHCI driver/mode blows in terms of performance. If I go compatibility, I'll lose, what, NCQ? Psh.

PS I built it from an OEM Windows XP Sp1 disk (100% genuine) I had, slipstreamed SP2, integrated that driver, and did no other modifications or tweaks.
