600X overheating

I'm currently running an upgraded 600X that began life as a 450 that is now a 750. Through Linux I've been able to stabilize the speedstep but after a while I'm getting some overheating issues. I've put Arctic Silver on the heatsink and CPU but after about 30mins the fan kicks on and stays on. Sometimes the machine will randomly go into suspend mode or shut off completely. I have 2 other fans both with heat pads on them, should I give them a try? I'd really like to keep the 750 if possible, but I'm beginning to think it might not be in the cards.

Any insight into how to approach this would really help me out.

Do you remove the pad? If so, processor and heatsink doesn't match or you've to use too much AS3/AS5. Take a look to the underside of heatsink... there's a quarter for the pad... use a dremel to get them plain. Then you've to drill the holes from the underside of the heatsink very carefully(!) a little bit deeper. Then take a look to the screws from heatsink - maybe they are now too long, shorten them or use otherones.

You might try to get the fan from a 650MHZ 600x. I am looking at both the 500MHZ 600x fan and the 650MHZ 600x fan and the 650MHZ fan is thicker the blades are wider and probably move more air.

I have solved a similar problem by placing an empty picture frame of the same size under my 600x while on my lap, thereby allowing it to cool. No problems since.
